I was told that TOT Ipstar would be back up to speed on 26 March. Today is 27 March and it still stinks.

I just timed how long it took Gmail to load. It took 1 minute and 15 seconds with Ipstar. I then tested my Nokia N-80 on GPRS and it took exactly 12 seconds. I tested it again on my phone and again 12 seconds. Why is my phone using GPRS so much faster?

Not sure about your IPSTAR , but is your phone utilizing EDGE?

Yes its EDGE GSM Evolution ... its basicly the first step to 3G Gsm ... what will followed by UMTS .. (but that will take ages .. in thailand for sure)

however .. the edge coverage with DTAC and AIS is pretty good and the speed is also amazing ..

i had sometimes with DTAC over 600KB Streams ...

but BE CAREFUL !!! that can cost you a huge amount of money if you dont have a promotion for GPRS usage !!!

even if prepaid ...

see picture as i maded some tests with dtac:

that was after 20 minutes extem surfing and testing ;-))

i have some doku but its in german

Have the same on a Dtac sim, -264 Baht or something...

Supposedly you should be able to switch to 1 Baht/min instead of paying by data transfer...

Here in Pattaya I find AIS edge to be faster then Dtac, testing continually over 200kbps to the Thaivisa servers in Singapore, and even over 300kbps to servers within Thailand!

Unfortunately servers in the US are more like 150kbps or even lower...

DTAC have only deployed EDGE to 1,000 of their 7,000 base stations, primarily in the metro-Bangkok area. AIS/1-2-Call have a much more extensive EDGE deployment as I've used EDGE in Phuket, Rayong, Chiang Mai and even in some remote areas in Isaan. (It even works when in a moving vehicle!) With EDGE I get ~ 125 kilo-bits per second (kbps). I am pretty sure all EDGE networks here are limited to four timeslots so a maximum data rate of 236.8 kilo-bits per second (kbps).

I would think that there must be inherent delays in the satellite uplink/downlink in addition to the basic internet delays so measuring response time vs. data throughput might not be the best comparison?

I live way out in the boonies, no EDGE here. I use the AIS GPRS package where every month they deduct 107 baht direct from my phone SIM card balance. For that 107 baht I get a huge amount of time. I think it's 20 hours per month. I still have 667 minutes left from this month. The bad part is when I use my phone hooked to my desk top or laptop computers with Bluetooth or the cable, it is VERY slow but through the phone it is great. Even My Yahoo home page is faster than my Ipstar connection.
