rooster59
Testing finds excessive chemical residues in produce at quarantine station By THE NATION Residual chemical substances were found in 1,500 samples of vegetables and fruits imported from China at Chiangsaen Plant Quarantine Station in Chiang Saen district of Chiang Rai province, said Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Mananya Thaiset today (November 1) after an inspection of the facility and testing of the produce without advance notice. The ministry is tasked with monitoring plant quarantine stations which are said to have imported agricultural produce with residual chemical substances exceeding the limit. It has no authority over the imports but to inform the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is responsible for consumer products in quarantine. The Public Health Ministry has been collaborating with The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to strictly check and quarantine produce with chemical residues and is planning to establish labs capable of detecting over 100 types of chemical substances in Chiang Khong Customs Checkpoint, said Mananya. FDA said that it's necessary to quarantine vegetables and fruits with exceeding amount of hazardous substances at Chiang Khong Customs Checkpoint as it is one of the largest distribution channels to several markets in Thailand. Dicrotophos, methamidophos and mevinphos were substances commonly found in 14 types of 1,500 samples including chilis, green pepper, oranges from Myanmar and celeries, purple cabbages, broccolis, radishes from China. Oranges were identified as the produce with the highest level of chemical residues. Thian
What's the use of putting it in quarantaine? Destroy it or send it back. Also test the australian produce please since that's what we eat.
bangkokfrog
We can now be assured that thanks to such rigorous testing the dastardly Chinese will not be able to sell their tainted products here. I'm surprised that the Honorable Deputy Minister didn't add that we can all rest easy now in the knowledge that no Thai would sell or taint products with "residual chemical substances"! 1

Russell17au
So the fruit and vegetables from China with the chemical residue is no good but the fruit and vegetables that are continually sprayed with the America chemicals by the Thai farmers are OK even if those chemicals have been banned by many other countries. 2

If the importer doesn't set a standard then you will get excessive chemical residue. Every grower tries his hardest to get a bumper crop and that means Using chemicals.(most times to much)

wisperone
Have been saying for years I don't want any food from china. Wouldn't trust it one bit. The scary thing is, when it comes to food components of a finished product, you have no idea that individual ingredients are coming from China. And traceability is always a problem. China can ship raw ingredients to another country and then forward them on to your country so you think they are ingredients from the last country shipped from. These are not good times for food consumption. 1
robblok
Wish they started testing more often and some follow up. Not just sending the information to an other ministery. They should also check Thai farmers more and put huge fines on too much chemicals. Maybe also a rule that forces destruction of vegetables that are over the limits. They should not only get tough with China but with their own farmers too.

Maybe you finaly understand why farmers should not be allowed to use dangerous chemicals. They poison us all. Be it Chinese or Thai farmers or even those from the US their goal is never to provide safe food, their goal is to fill their pockets anyway they can. Without good checks farmers would poison us all. They might simply not test for glyphosate or glyphosate is not used on the produce tested or it might not exceed "safe" levels. Here is what was found for Canadian produces for example: https://globalnews.ca/news/3379799/nearly-30-of-food-products-contain-residue-of-pesticide-glyphosate-cfia-report/ In comparison Chinese don't seem to use as much glyphosate: https://www.tonu.org/2017/02/02/chinese-food/ Edited November 3, 2019 by Tayaout

You will have to grow your own veggie patch to be sure and not rely on farmers for your food. It's the only way you will be safe. 1

All imported goods are inflated in Thailand in case you haven't done your research you mental minion. I'll back any Australian veg or meat to be cleaner than "organic" Thai products any time. Organic is 90% BS even in developed countries and thats been proven. 1

Australian regulations regarding meat and veg etc are very strict, far more so than Thailand and China which is why they are regarded as some of the best in the world.
