Report Nicobar Islands Rocked by 15 Earthquakes
Picture courtesy of Thai Rath On 25th June, the popular Facebook page "Mitrearth" reported over 15 moderate earthquakes in the Andaman Sea, urging locals to stay informed and review evacuation routes. The earthquakes, ranging from magnitudes 3.x to 5.x, occurred off Thailand’s southern coast. The page suggests these might be linked to an underwater volcano, potentially triggering a tsunami if it erupts. Historically, similar earthquake swarms were reported in 2005 without major incident. Large quakes in 1847 and 1881 highlight the area’s seismic activity, but this fault line is known for horizontal movement, reducing tsunami risk. Three scenarios are considered: The swarm might simply pass without incident. An underwater volcanic eruption could cause mild sea disturbances. Although unlikely, a large earthquake could occur, but it’s not expected to produce a tsunami. The public is advised to follow updates day and night and be prepared with evacuation strategies. The post has sparked significant discussion, including from marine scientist Thon Thamrongnawasawat, who emphasised the importance of staying informed about potential outcomes.
