I think the locals driving is my biggest dislike , certainly noise comes close. Sitting having a chat and coffee then talking stops as a horrid youth goes by on his Honda Wave with the loudest exhaust his money can buy. My middle digit right hand goes up every time , if someone says it is rude to do this I say let that moron on the bike come and complain.

Nice an quiet, maybe some music from far away in the background, the sound of laughter from the kids. Nice most of the time. One time this selfish idiot, and his family backed their pickup truck a few huts away and proceeded blasting music so loud that we had to shout to each other to talk. Needles to say,the day was ruined, and we packed up an left. Why the authorities or the vendors in the area would not say anything is beyond me. Looks really nice and worth a day trip with the kids when we are in Udon. Can u be more precise about the location and/or give it a name so I can find it on google please? Saltire
My brother in law who lives with us was a monk for 15 years and left the Wat about 3 years ago. We are in a small village and he was smart enough to see that the locals who hired out the equipment for weddings, funerals, new monk celebrations etc were a bit thin on the ground, so he invested in 2 sets of sound systems. One he calls big and one he calls small. Believe me the small is loud enough for any event, and the big is way too big. He has 4 speakers that take 4 people to load onto the pickup. He is quite considerate and always starts off any music at an acceptable level, but tells me withing a minute or 2 the customer turns it up full blast. Fortunately there are only 3 potential customers within earshot of our house, so we never really hear him. He also spends a fair bit of time maintaining his kit and I have to say the sound is good, not bass-heavy and minimal distortion. About once a month he checks everything in our yard but not at ridiculous hours of the day or night. Actually as a 70's rock fan, sometimes I plug in my phone just for fun, and give our neighbours a brief introduction to Motorhead and Black Sabbath. I don't think they like it much ????

For example this one: https://goo.gl/maps/ojhmzWcXhXvSwnWK7 Or this one: https://goo.gl/maps/yoHKNbAuB41sLU6o7 I don't know at which exact location the previous poster was.

This reminds me of another issue regarding noise: The core practice of Theravada Buddhism is supposed to be meditation. So the fact that, with Wats and monks everywhere here, there is no official criticism or condemnation of noise and bass levels by The Buddhist head honchos, because it interferes with meditation, leads me to think that there is precious little meditation being practised at most Wats in Thailand. If there was an appeal to curb it coming from the Buddhist hierarchy, I think the superstitious Thai people (worrying about decreasing their karmic likelihood of winning the lottery) might actually respond and lower the volume and bass...???? Popular Post 30la
This is a Thai disease, they are already starting at school with these deafening noises, we continue to the temple and then, clearly after these good examples, you do it night and day in the car and at home. I have no words for this obscene behavior, respect for others is a non-existent word in Thailand!

Bands like Pink Floyd used to spend a small fortune recording their music to perfection only for some idiot to turn up the bass, play it as it was meant to sound. As I keep saying to my wife I wouldn't mind the loud music so much if I could actually hear it instead of a Lancaster bomber going overhead. On the beach during holidays you will get a line of pickups parked and all of them blasting music all day, can't understand how the batteries don't discharge? That comment made me laugh! When my mother-in-law passed away in her provincial village, the family arranged for the wake and hired a guy to come out with his big speakers and play the music while everyone sat around and ate and drank. The music was so loud that no one bothered to try to talk to each other. I asked my wife to tell the sound guy to turn the volume down to a reasonable level, so he did until my wife walked away, then he cranked it back up to suit himself....and we were the ones paying the idiot!!! These guys just don't care. They have an idea in their minds of what they think it's supposed to sound like, so it's almost like bad publicity for the guy if he doesn't do the music according to their tradition. It's completely insane. I might add that most are afraid to tell the guy to turn the music down. That one I just don't understand at all.
Popular Post fantom
I wonder at the hearing health of young children and babies exposed to these sound levels. It is very easy to permanently damage hearing at a young age apart from other problems. Even a db app downloaded to ones smartphone tells us how high the sound levels can be. I don't pretend they provide particularly accurate readings but can provide a good indication. Another indication is if you experience ringing in the ears after exposure, that is indicative of actual damage being done.

Needles to say,the day was ruined, and we packed up an left. Why the authorities or the vendors in the area would not say anything is beyond me. This is a good place for me to say what nobody else will say on this topic. I think we can all agree that nobody likes the noise, but what we are all voicing here is not just frustration, but pure old simple "righteous indignation" that people who do such things are actually sinning against us. I think most of us were raised with some form of Christian values, and we are all familiar with the principles of "do until others as you would have them do unto you", "love your neighbor as yourself" or "put the interests of others before your own" just to mention a few. Those concepts just don't seem to be present in the hearts of most of the Thais. What we do see in Thailand is an abundance of SIN camouflaged as Thainess or tradition, and we are dealing with people who are by in large focused on "self" with little to no regard for the needs, desires and peace of others. One can see it every day in every facet of Thai life, from the corruption, the scams, the hideous driving, the lies and deceit that is rampant….and the list goes on and on. Thailand has evolved into a "ME FIRST" society, and that sort of thinking just goes against the grain of everything that most people from the West believe in. For us the priority is to exercise common decency and respect for others, and we recognize that our behavior should work for the common good of the community and not just for ourselves. Of course there are those even in the West who don't recognize these attributes, and they usually wind up behind bars. If those same standards were applied in Thailand, I'm afraid there wouldn't be enough prisons to hold all the lawbreakers. 7 1

We are one street back from the local park so when they hold any events the windows in our house shake very badly due to the full bass and you cant hear each other talk unless you shout, thais have no idea what music should sound like, maybe thats why they like stuff that sounds like screaming cats Ever heard Thai guys trying to sing? They even make Peltin Elton and Stevie Wonder sound good, when you hear any of these two singing, you will be thankful for a loud heavy bass sound to drown them out. ????

Stevemercer
I guess the loud music is why so many elderly Thai have to shout at each other. Their ears have gone after decades of loud, amplified music. I found it funny at a local Thai bar we sometimes went to which had a video music set up. If we played western music loudly, it was always turned down at the request of the Thai patrons. Once the Thai music started it was turned up and up until it was just distorted noise.

I don't attend Thai parties or weddings anymore, simply because they crank up the music so load nobody can hear anybody talking without yelling to each other. Thai mentality in most cases is something I find hard to comprehend. TIT
