Trump vows U.S. Navy will not oust commando who posed with corpse from SEALs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted the U.S. Navy's handling of a Navy SEAL whose rank he recently restored following a court martial, saying he would not allow the service to remove his SEAL status.

 

This marks the most recent intervention by Trump in a military case and comes despite senior Navy leadership supporting a decision to review Edward Gallagher's status as a SEAL.

 

"The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin. This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!" Trump said in a post on Twitter.

 

A military jury convicted Gallagher of illegally posing with an Islamic State detainee's corpse while deployed to Iraq in 2017 but acquitted him of murder, prompting a demotion in rank and pay but not prison time.

Critics said Trump’s moves undermined military justice and sent a message that battlefield atrocities would be tolerated.

 

U.S. officials and Gallagher's lawyer told Reuters on Tuesday that Navy officials were considering whether to remove him from the Navy's special operations force.

 

Gallagher and three other SEALs were notified on Wednesday that they must appear before a board that will decide whether they should be stripped of their SEAL status.

 

The Navy referred questions to the White house.

I guess you must have served with very different soldiers from the ones I served with. They'd scorn anyone that thought taking a photo with a dead person was a crime.

Frankly, it's becoming pathetic.

Seriously, what the politicians have been doing to the UK military is a crime. Now, they couldn't even take back the Falklands if the Argies tried again.

War is the killing of one group of people by another group of people usually for gain. The so called rules of conduct were codified over many years using words like chivalry, gentlemanly, honourable, all euphemisms for causing the other persons death.

The Great wars have now gone leaving us with “conflicts” and proxy wars and the rules seem to apply to one side only and are applied by self righteous people sat behind a desk.

This case involving the Navy Seal has convicted him of the least of the crimes he was accused of, if this was all he did it should never have been publicised and those who were offended by it are not fit for purpose.

The people we send to kill in our names have ROE but their opposition have none, do we condemn them or do we apply common sense.

If that were true, wouldn't it be that he was being prosecuted for and not taking a photo of a dead man.

We want rough men to protect us and then crucify them when they behave like rough men. 

Perhaps we should just leave and let bad people do what they will because we are too PC to do the job.

Rome fell because Romans got too soft to do the job and they had to get mercenaries to fight for them.

It overlooks the corruption in government and massive military overspending following Rome’s decision at the outset of the second century, to limit further expansion of the empire, expansion that built and sustained the empire... not to mention the curious fact that Christianity’s rise matched the downfall of Rome.

Rump is a micro manager he may keep the E-7 his trident but how many missions will the E-7 get now. He has continued to enter into working spaces he has been told not to enter. He is the type of guy who thinks the rules do not apply to him. It was his teammates who turned him in for dnagerous conduct. People are taught to fight and to kill but not to leave there humanity behind.

Just so you know I think it was stabbing to death a wounded prisoner that ticked them off more than taking photos with corpses of dead enemies seals are supposed to be the cream of the crop so to speak that’s why they are supposed to perform to and held to a higher standard

I'll put this threat/promise right next to the rest of the list of things he has and will fail to do.
