Need Help Finding Lost Computer File

Featured Replies

I am looking for a very large file in my computer but it is not in drive c or drive d is there anyplace else i should look?

I've looked on my computer too, and I can't find it.

If you haven't already tried this.

Click Start -> Search -> for files of folders.

Then go the the box that says 'Look In' and pull down to 'My Computer'

In the box called 'Search Options' select 'Type' and then pull down to the file type you have lost.

If you know the name of the file, enter that in the box called 'Search for files of folders called'

and if the file is a document that you can remember some text from (for example if it contains a name) enter that in the box called 'containing text'

Click search and go make a cup of tea.

If you don't find anything alter the information that you entered (above)

Or simply search on file type and then spool through the results.

Please clarify:-

You know the name of the file and you can't find it? I.e. what is name of file, what is its extension {e.g .doc, .xls}

or

It's say a Word document and you can't open it from the recently opened files menu?

More you tell us, better we can help

Regards

OK here's an example.

Let's surpose you are trying to find a word document that you recall contains a telephone number '7628409273'

Set up the search as shown in the attachment.

Search.doc

Make sure under folder options you have "view hidden files" enabled. If the file is for some reason hidden it will not turn up in a search otherwise.

Some info on the file along with your OS will help us non-psychics out considerably.
