webfact Posted December 3, 2019 Share Posted December 3, 2019 Koh Samet: Six Chinese tourists injured as speedboat goes into back of water delivery boat Picture: Manager Online Manager reported that six tourists were taken to hospital after a speedboat carrying a group of 11 Chinese tourists on a snorkeling trip collided with the back of another boat delivering water. The incident happened three to four nautical miles from the island of Koh Samet. The tourists were on a trip from Pattaya organised by tour company Thailer Travel International. Along with a Thai guide they had hired a boat run by Sea King that was driven by 26 year old Yotsaphon. Pol Maj Thanathip Jitrakhanee of the Rayong tourist police was instrumental in making sure that the injured tourists got to hospital, reported Manager who seemed anxious to play down the seriousness of the incident. Picture: Manager Online Yuan, 63, was hospitalized with a broken bone in his left shoulder. The five other tourists were treated for superficial injuries and allowed to return to Pattaya. Prawet Suphachai of the Region 6 Harbor Master's office said he would be investigating and talking to the speedboat driver ahead of the case being prosecuted. Sea King promised that all the tourists hospital bills would be paid and they would be paying compensation too. Thaivisa notes that the Thai authorities are particularly jumpy when it comes to water borne accidents involving the Chinese. This follows the Phoenix tragedy in Phuket when more than three dozen lost their lives in an incident that had a big effect on Chinese tourism to Thailand. Some guy on a motorbike plowed into the back of a parked car and rolled off the back of the trunk (boot). Too many major car accidents where someone has been rear ended, but two boats kilometres from land? It doesn't matter what a Thai drives. These speedboats often "trim" the prop to lift the bow high up in the air, for a "thrill" for the passengers - but of course, like that the driver (I refuse to use the word captain since that implies some degree of competence) has no hope of seeing what's directly in front of him...
