EU welcomes clear Conservative victory as clarity over Brexit

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European diplomats on Thursday welcomed the clarity an apparently decisive election victory for the Conservative Party gave to Britain's stalled withdrawal from the EU, but said it would be challenging to agree a trade deal by the end of 2020.

Exit polls showed the Conservatives of Boris Johnson would enjoy a majority of 86 in the 650-seat British parliament.

"What's certain tonight is that this clarification seems to have come," France's European affairs minister Amelie de Montchalin told reporters in Brussels.

She said EU leaders would now discuss the mandate to negotiate the future relationship with Britain after the country's planned exit from the bloc at the end of January.

"The most important thing with Brexit is not the way we divorce, it's what we build afterwards," she said.

Britain and the EU have to negotiate a trade deal by the end of 2020 because that is when a transition period for Britain's withdrawal ends and when trade relations between London and its biggest trading partner - the EU - would revert to World Trade Organization standards.

But EU officials warn that negotiating a trade deal with Britain in less than 12 months will be very difficult, as normally such agreements take years.

"(It is) a tall order to move on the future relationship in such a short time," one EU official said.

Usual EU political cobblers.

What people seem to ignore is that the EU needs a deal far more than the UK does.  When we voted to leave we should have left the next day and told them to come to us for a deal.  Thousands of EU jobs rely on Exports to Britain, far more than British jobs rely on Europe. Too many statistics have been twisted to suit the Remainers views.

Yes, about the time the waffling ended. Now EU can get the rest of the financial services to Frankfurt and start moving whatever else they bought from UK back to the real continental Europe.

I hope the Thai leaders and Thai public also realise how quickly and honest the results were confirmed....!!!!!

According to her calculations, Dianne Abbott says Labour won with a working majority of over 500

“But EU officials warn that negotiating a trade deal with Britain in less than 12 months will be very difficult, as normally such agreements take years.” Yep and what have these clowns been doing these past few years, playing tiddlywinks?

Well finally. All those TV posters claiming the UK want to remain. I hope they fully understand now. Those Non Brits on here keeping telling the UK people whats good for them and the people want to remain in the EU. Clearly not.

Hopefully the champagne socialist called Labour will have a clear out and start from the bottom because if not they could lose voters for life if they haven't already.

So the EU members better start getting their money together as they will have a big hole to fill. Hopefully start paying for the privilege of fishing in British waters.

Very doubtful that is going to happen. Frankfurt hasn't got the capacity. The City will now be looking to Boris to make accommodation with EU re financial services now that Hard Brexit pushed aside.

Of course not possible as the Brexit Party won over 100 MPs.

So Johnson's deal it will be. What happened to the only real brexit, a hard brexit?

So time for the EU to get on with it and negotiate in good faith.

No more hiding behind BRINO and the Merkel/May pact. No more Remainer UK Parliament to delay and disrupt a deal. No more closet Remain civil service subterfuge to hide the truth.

Time for the pragmatists in the EU to accept you need it more than the UK now.

Let me guess, you conclude that based on balance of trade?

Whether true or not, how does that support your theory?

At least they don’t try to answer questions based on irrelevant data.

So, the climax of the British election is over. does this mean that the chance of a hard Brexit will soften a bit? Remember Benny Hill... 555

Geezer

Yes, all those stats saying it is the UK that needs a deal are doctored. Stop blaming others for the mess you created.

Let me guess: you’ll pull out that balance of trade numbers again and talk about all the BMWs and Audis on UK streets. Analytics geniuses. ????????

Thanks for admitting that the whole Remain propaganda machine was a lie. Russian bots working for you were they?
By 'mess' I presume you mean the the past three years of unsuccessful Remainer trickery and subterfuge? The blame for that rests fairly and squarely with Remainers and your lying & cheating which created the political, constitutional and economic mess. Another one that real patriots and Tories will now have to sort out.
