Not once have I been asked to show ID when buying a bus ticket at stations all over the country (I always buy them in person). Once a ticket seller in Khorat asked for my name, I said "David." Of all the hotels I have used on my recent road trips, only one has asked for my passport, and the lady at the desk had no idea how to read it, she went back a couple of pages and then pointed to a stamp which said 2017, she could not understand any of the rest of it. You can be asked for your passport at any time so many of us long-term residents always have a copy available. There has been a ton of discussions on TV about always carrying your passport or a copy. If you are Chinese and your social security score is low you are not allowed to buy plane tickets and get a passport.
