A Virginian biochemist has been named winner of Miss America 2020 after performing a live science experiment that defied stereotypes of the contest.

Camille Schrier defeated 50 women to take the crown at Thursday's final in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Wearing a lab coat, the 24-year-old impressed judges with a chemistry demonstration in the talent show.

Ms Schrier won a $50,000 (£38,000) scholarship and a one-year role as Miss America.

In her role as Miss America, Ms Schrier will spend a year advocating for Mind Your Meds, a drug safety and prevention programme.

Definitely a worthy cause.

The 2000 Starfield study, Is US health really the best in the world?”, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, revealed 7,000 deaths annually from medication errors in US hospitals and 106,000 deaths from FDA-approved correctly prescribed medicines

Overall, the US medical system was the third leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer.

Heaven knows what the situation must be now, with the US emerging from an opioid painkiller prescription addiction epidemic which caused 14,926 deaths in 2017 alone and a further 12,757 last year. Good luck, Miss America!

Since 2018 the competition has attempted to re-brand its image, scrapping its swimwear segment and appearance-based judging criteria.

Instead, contenders showcase their talents and are interviewed about their passion, intelligence and understanding of the Miss America role.

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outwards, physical appearance. That's huge," said former Miss America winner Gretchen Carlson, who announced the reforms in 2018.

it's not only huge, but also completely pointless.

I went to Caltech. Trust me. The last thing anyone wants is a beauty contest with "women of science".  Unless your intent is to drive the entire male population into a deep psychosis.

Bring back the swimsuit competition. Outward appearance in these types of contests is everything.

Bla Bla Bla .... Yeah let's stop the bikini parades, cover up the bodies, promote transgender inclusion in womens pangents, hell let's stop pageants altogether because they highlight some, some of the feminine and that is BAD. The cost of homogeneity of the sexes is an inevitable devastating blowback in the individual and collective psyche by refusing denying space for, the very nature of difference between the sexes which paradoxically is crucial to how we find common ground and co-exist. Hell in a handbasket.
