New Year Celebrations - Why?

Featured Replies

I've never celebrated New Year's Eve but it was the key day in my dad's year for whatever reason.

I don't understand how there can be more than 1 new year in a 12 month period.

Different calendars ????‍♂️

That's why. Hogmany being the biggest <deleted> up of the year.

Celebrating New Year traditionally has a link to Jesus. As far as I'm concerned it's just another day and always go to bed way before midnight. Yes I do wake up up at midnight but that's only because of the sound of fireworks etc. Even planet Earth doesn't return to its position as of one year before because we are spiralling through the galaxy and not just going round in circles, Ha!

OP must be the life and soul of any party. ????????????

Sounds more like a crabby old man cheap Charlie post. I was hoping the NEW YEAR (yes it’s a New Year). There would be less of them. Have you started to buy your ground hog day tree or presents yet?  One month to go!

I have never seen the logic of counting down to a totally artificial New Year timing.  As the whole calendar is a man invented phenomena and the world time is different in different time zones, what is the point of all the fuss made at 12 midnight anywhere?   Okay if you just want a party, but why wrap it up in a patent falsehood?  I place it firmly with the Black Friday made up day, the idiotic Valentines Day, the equally ludicrous run up to  Christmas and many other made up occasions, to get ripped off by retailers.  We need to have some serious adjustments made in the new world order, when it comes.  Back to my morning coffee, kicking the cat and shouting at the wife.

I think it's because people like new beginnings in order to "fix" bad things that might have happened to then in the previous year. Kinda "reset button". As for the rest of the events you mentioned I'm with you - just the way capitalism works. Generate events to get people spend money.

Can't help you with coffee nor shouting at the wife, but more than happy to gift you my 2 cats for kick practice. You might miss 1, but you'll have 2 more targets to go at...

It seems some people need a reason to party and/or get drunk.

The Thais love any excuse to make a noise. it's like wearing a uniform to them.

Commercial reasons.

Which commercial reasons are you thinking about? If you don't want, you don't really have to buy anything while waiting for 12pm.

There are more partying in the western world than here during New year's Eve. And much more and better fireworks.

Every party’s gotta have a pooper..,

What harm does it do?  It's some fun and you can choose to participate or not. I have celebrated Christmas's and New Years more than 70 times, not in any big way but just going with the flow.

What kinds of things DO you celebrate? Are you an Adventurer or a stay-at-home? Or maybe you just need your early nights!

completely agree with you.

Black Friday is different.   Yes its a made-up day, BUT online you can find some excellent deals.  I bought a mega cheap shaving razor and saved 40% on the usual online price.

So, I have no problem with black friday.

But I also take it as far as Birthdays too.   I mean, seriously,, its just a made up idea that we need to keep on celebrating a day that happened decades ago.

Why dont we celebrate the first time we had sex, or the first time we had out first drink or car ?

wedding anniversaries too,,, seriously,, its all made up.

religious holidays (no matter what religion) are usually celebrating something that happened thousands of years ago.

its all a way for retailers and restaurants to make money.

If I had a restaurant, then obviously I would advertise Valentines, or do xmas events.

if I had a shop I would do special deals for certain days.

its just one big symbiotic circle where business and consumers perpetuate each other.

I'm sure, if you looked deeper into your own habits and patterns, you would see something things you do which dont make sense.

Not sure if this also fits the equation, but how about buying Branded clothes/shoes (which you pay 20 times more for, and are made in indonesia). In some cases they are made better, but in many cases definitely not.
Nike is a classic example.   ultra expensive and dont last so long.

Adidas however last so much longer generally.

(the shoe example is from experience, consistently my sons Nike shoes all fall apart,, and his adidas ones never broke) finally I realised that Nike is sh*t!  (nice designs but cheap manufacture).
Adidas (german company)  Sturdy good quality (as one would expect).

side note:  did you know that adidas and Puma are brothers?  they argued and split and made seperate competing shoe companies.  Amazing fact I think.
