'Robin Hood' American arrested on three year overstay

Naew Na reported the arrest of an American on a near three year overstay yesterday.

In one of the media's most gloating stories about the arrest of foreigners they referred to the arrested pensioner as a "Robin Hood" and said "Game Over" in their headline after the arrest of the US "oldie".

They then said that everyone from the prime minister down wanted to rid Thailand of foreign lawbreakers and those taking Thai jobs and urged the public to report them on a hotline.

In the latest case a detail led by Pol Lt-Col Songphan Kundilok of the Region 1 Immigration Bureau arrested Mark L., aged 71, in Soi Mee Suwan 3. He had overstayed by nearly 3 years.

Naew Na said that the retiree loved Thailand so much that he wanted to live out his remaining days in the country. But he lived like Robin Hood.

By this Thaivisa notes that they probably just meant that he was a person living outside the law.

Naew Na then said that the arrest was part of the policy from the top to rid Thailand of unwanted foreign lawbreakers. They mentioned PM Prayut Chan-Ocha, DPM Prawit Wongsuwan, RTP chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda and IB chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang as ordering this.

They asked the public to report overstaying foreigners, those working without work permits and those working in 39 jobs that are reserved for Thais only. They urged the public to call 1178 to do that.

Ok, I am all for people following the rules when it comes to visa, but at times must have compassion and common sense . Guy is the end of his life, clearly not well off , not a burden on society or government , most certainly not taking away any jobs or a criminal. How about being compassionate to find out why he overstayed, and perhaps fine him and offer some solutions instead of locking up and sending back as if he was some kind of international gun runner

'Immigration' is a very hot-topic in many Western countries.

I have, thus far, resisted the baying mob on TV saying that the government want rid of farangs but it's very hard to argue against this statement.

Have you forgotten where you are, and who is running the country ?

Time for a stiff short black, that should help, "this is the land of smiles" have money, no pompen, we love Chinese and rich Indians, poor falang out, not care !!!

The above said, to be fair, they have rules, regardless, as do other countries, if you can't muster the criteria, everyone will send you on your way.

Safe travels fella.

So, if lots of people aren't let into a country because of their race, regardless of what kind of person they are, that's racism?

It is by Western Liberal definition.

The guy in this story probably wouldn't be able to migrate to many Western countries, sounds like he has no money or job, or any prospect of one. Why is this a big deal when the Thais are just doing what many other countries would do?

Who ever told you he could not pay his hospital bills or did not have insurance ? Or needed medical treatment ?

Yes, rules are rules but can be enforced in many different ways

Tend to agree Danny.

Certainly, immigration is a hot topic in the UK including many people asking why illegal immigrants aren't being expelled, along with those who break laws regularly or are clearly criminals. There is a feeling existing laws just aren't being enforced.

It seems the authorities here are determined to enforce their laws, with more focus on this, from high and repeated reminders to those responsible at the coal-face to do their jobs.

However, too much continued pressure and focus can often drive the wrong behavior. Officers become pressured to be more rigid and frightened in case they are perceived as being to relaxed, friendly or helpful.

Encouraging citizens to report people can, and has often in many countries, fostered extreme xenophobia leading to very unfortunate consequences. Especially when used as a divert and deflect tactic by government from other issues they don't want their citizens concentrating on.

You mean if he paid an agent so these guys get their cut, then there wouldn't be a problem right.

I’d rather think someone who is well off and not at the end of his life is not a burden. So let we both break the immigration laws?

(btw: He is a criminal. Read the article.)

Doesn't sound like this guy has any money.

Also, most of the farang in jail in Thailand are there on drugs charges.

Living like 'Robin Hood' involves thieving.

I prefer a well-educated young Arab man who can contribute his skills to society and had to flee his country because of war over a 71 year old who apparently isn’t even able or willing to get the right visa. And if I was as xenophobic as you, I’d add that i don’t want 71 year old sexpats. Not that it matters.

There is calls in this thread for racism, that it would be a terrible crime, the rules are not enforce in the right way and excuses about loving rich and poor out.

Sorry guys! Nothing of this is even remotely relevant. They are enforcing the immigration law, and doing what stands in it.

People on this forum tend to complain when police do not enforce the rules they deem important. Out of their own interest of course. The same people also comes to this threads and state that this is not right.

What is right then? Should Thailand and the authorities bend over and do what ever every individual foreigner wish? You people can´t do that in you own home countries or any other country. Why would you think it´s ok for people to come to Thailand and break the immigration law, as well as trying to come up with poor comments and excuses?

It´s really easy. Just see to that you have your papers clear and there is no problem.

Yes, law breaking is a restricted occupation, Thais only.

If he doesn't have money how is he going to pay his medical bills, must the taxpayer do this?
