As I recall there must be 3 or 4 drainage pipes under Walking Street already.

Seems the city was installing or repairing drainage pipes under Walking Street every 3 or 4 years for awhile, before it had a brick work surface installed. (The pipe sections were not connected properly and kept filling with sand.) There was a Naris Art Gallery on Walking Street at the time and a fella named Naris was president of the Walking Street group for awhile.

They come in family groups for the food, the temples and shopping. Much more wholesome pursuits I would say. They dwarf any other spend in Thailand per capita. The worlds tourist industry is desperate to get them in.

Well I must have seen a different side of the Chinese tourists than you have, and I have been out and about in amongst them for a few years now and my observations show: –

 

– They are not generally big spenders, with their shopping trolleys in the supermarkets I have been in, mostly full of cheap rubbish, especially dried fruit and seaweed to take home.

 

– They queue for hours outside of cheap restaurants, and one particular restaurant in Patong is notable for having a long stream of Chinese standing outside waiting for seat at the trough, all for a 90 baht meal of some description.

 

– I have seen a few small groups of Chinese guys in go-gos ogling the females, as well as a few doing the same in bars that have girls dancing on poles. And I have watched the ladyboys at the entrance to a soi here regularly tempt Chinese guys into short time rooms, with one particular L/B taking four in just over an hour.

 

– They are very messy in just about everything they do and a friend of mine who owns an establishment here, just yesterday said don't ever go to a restaurant that's been frequented by Chinese because they leave more mess than a three year old would do at the table – – disgusting was his description.

 

– They have no idea how to behave in public places, and two days ago I had to stand over a large group of them and shout at them to be quiet because they were just so noisy shouting across the restaurant at each other, seemingly unable to talk normally.

 

– They have no problem putting their feet on the tables in café's, and indeed I saw one Chinese guy clipping his toenails on the table of a café before the manager came over and screamed at him, yet this Chinese guy saw no problem with it.

 

I could go on and on, and I will say one thing, give me the "seedy expats" any day over this bunch of ignorant trash.

Well, I lived in China for more than two years. The Chinese behave in Thailand exactly like they do at home. I can tourism managers (of the TAT), who want to attract tourists from specific markets, only recommend to tour big cities in the target markets for 1-2 weeks, just to get a picture, whether people/tourists from these countries are the tourists you really want to attract. IMHO, if you want Chinese quality tourists, better attract them in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

I wish it was..............but all true, and what reason would I have to lie. The manager of the local Starbucks stopped the toenail clipping (as did I) and it was seen by other staff and customers.

 

The business owner friend said that the table was a MESS after the Chinese had eaten there; not about clearing away the plates.

 

As for the raucous noise in a local Starbucks.......shouting across the room from one side to another IMO does NOT consist of "a social situation" more of ignorance.

 

I have the unfortunate experience of witnessing this and wish these buggers would not come here, and for the record EVERY THAI that I know hates them.

 

Your comments show naivete to say the least.........they DONT spend a great deal and queuing for ages to buy a 90 baht meal really does not count as high level spend.

 

Go defend the indefensible elsewhere....or look on these threads to see other similar comments re. the Chinese.

You are wrong on so many counts, I barely know where to start. First of all, when i mention class, it is based on income. Most of the Indian and Chinese tourists coming here have incomes of less than $15,000 a year. Call that whatever class you want. 

 

Second, I do not judge a man by how attracted he is to women, nor whether or not he pays for sex, or just dates, and pays on the back end. It is always a front end, or a back end deal. Wholesome? By who's standards? 

 

Though Chinese are the highest spending group in the world as tourists, that is a composite average. It include the wealthy Chinese, who rarely come to Thailand, so the numbers are totally skewed. If you are scientific about it, you will take that fact into account.

While it's admirable the authorities are trying to bury the electrical cables. "Unsightliness" should be the least of the reasons why they should be buried. Having exposed cables is potentially dangerous, plus I'm fed up with power outtages every time it rains due to something happening to the cables. I just wish they plan these things out better from the outset to minimise disruptions... Just another case of Thai authorities being more concerned about appearances over actual safety and practicality.

You are correct.  Also, just about everything they can buy here is cheaper to buy back in China, including sex, so why would they buy here?
