Another problem paying bills

Featured Replies

I read on here a week or so ago, some one had a problem paying utility bills at a local store. Today i attempted to pay my 1000b + Electric bill at our local Tesco Express store, I was told  "farang cannot pay", I had my Thai wife alongside me who then attempted to pay,  but was told she cannot unless she has her I.D card, when we asked why this was  the girl serving said it's to stop  money laundering !!..

We went across the road  to the 7/11 who accepted the bill /payment, my wife asked the girl "farang can pay" or a "Thai can pay without ID card" ?  she replied that she can "step over" the procedure, whatever that means. but we paid the bill and wait & see  what happens  next month..

Your wife has an ID card so let her bring it next time problem solved.

I pay everything with my Thai bank no thai wife or Thai ID card needed.

If Tesco wouldn't let you pay because you're a foreigner, then, of course, they wouldn't let your wife pay without an ID card.  Makes sense to me.

Reports about this grow like mushrooms.

Also seems to confirm that it is a Tesco Lotus specific annoyance.

One of the first(?) in the forum:

Remind your wife that she always has to carry ID when in public.

For many years money for electric, water, House phone, Internet has been debited direct from my bank account.

Of course I check against the bills, but never had a problem.

Money laundering ????

Can anyone give even one reason how someone could launder money by paying an electrical bill?
