PM not happy with proposed freeze of VOA for Chinese tourists

Featured Replies

As usual, several posters have jumped right in with both feet and assumed that the PM has vetoed the proposal.  He hasn't.

Sounds like he would be happy to change Visa On Arrival to Virus On Arrival?

In Thailand tourist money is more important than ordinary Thai lives.

They've dug their own grave here and this is the 'perfect storm' type of situation which will be their undoing.

Wow!

How many of the still millions of western tourists you think are affected by rules that are only a problem for longstayers, back to back visa "tourists" and frequent border runners?

There are other reasons:

The sharp decline of major western currencies against the THB hand in hand with thai price increases, upcoming competitors etc.

Just like the very similar SARS coronavirus epidemic a few years ago, you mean?  The one that never got a permanent foothold and wasn't here for years in terms of infections?

SARS was around for several years after it first struck, they covered it up at first.

didn't seem to bother the russians

Nothing bothers the Russians. I do envy that character of theirs, even when it does lead to early graves. Something to do wit Stoicism, a quality very rare in the current world. And something that will be sorely needed before this pandemic is over.

Why is the Thai government not looking at what other neighboring countries have done to take action? And China itself?

Because Thailand under this "elected" government thinks of itself as a leader, not a follower.

Because Thailand ..... desires to be the HUB of all smart decisions.

Because Thailand under Prayut is now seriously in bed with the CCP.

Because Prayut and his policies seriously frigged up the Thai tourism industry already and he thinks this is his golden opportunity to recover it from the neighbours.

The coronavirus may very well be a blessing in disguise for Prayut and his ministries. As 2020 unfolds, now they can blame the collapse of tourism, which was already underway, on the coronavirus.

You'll find that Thailand is a real, independent, sovereign nation.

Well, until there’s another coup.
Hey, buddy?

The only problem is how are they going to spin the drought to be caused by the coronavirus? The dam gate operator upstream in China croaked and shut the gates with his falling body?

I was talking tourism but I'm confident that they will figure out a way to blame almost anything on the Chinese and/or the coronavirus. Hell, China is already responsible for the almost dried up river. If it needs a spin, just hand it over to TAT.

Prayuth needs to buy some high end whitening cream.  His nose has turned a nasty shade of brown.

Thought he was in bed....?

Sometimes, and there it is; he would have done better to stay there rather than come and recite, mouth to heart, the directives that the Premier of China breathes into him.

This story needs to get out to the world where anybody except China can read it. The world needs to know that literally everyone else's safety doesn't count for squat to Thailand. And that includes Thailand's own people.

Surely it'll already be out there there by now...

The prime minister said they have to foster confidence among Thai people and foreign tourists by creating awareness that the quality of our public health system is up to the standards of World Health Organisation (WHO),” she added.

Sure this guy wont be happy until the carts are in the street collecting the dead and a man in a plague mask painting large 'X's' on doors

sound of money better than health concerns of the people?

surely the scenario is not that dreadful at this point in time.

Puppet man Chan is really living the high life now no turning back!  He couldn't care anything about his own people he might actually thinks he is Chinese!  as he noted once " we are brothers "

Keeping the Chinese out means like spending money!

In the meeting, the minister of Tourism and Sports also disagreed with the proposal, because it might hurt the feeling of Chinese tourists and the country’s tourism in the long term”.

"Best quote ever", said The Grim Reaper.

it has nothing to do with sentiments but a question of the health welfare of the thais that should be prime consideration.

better not to test the health system at the cost of possible endangering the health of the people.

He has no clue. Singapore just suspended all China arrivals including anyone not just Chinese who transits Singapore and visited China within the last 2 weeks. Airlines are stopping flights. WHO has just upgraded to an Emergency level. Has he not heard of prevention is better than cure?

You're assuming that the Thai government is able to follow a logical or sensible course of action based on the example or experience of other countries.

Mistake.

Ooops now we have no farangs and no Chinese....what you gonna do when the economy comes for you?

That has got to mean that the ‘bring-happiness-back-to-the-people-campaign’ has failed completely then, yes?

Admittedly, some were so glad to be rid of another Shin...  But I don't remember anyone here cheering him into office.

I do recall a collective sigh of relief that a bad situation in 2014 didn't explode into bombings and gunfire and mass killings on the street, as has happened several times in the past.  Along with some cautious optimism.  Optimism that didn't pan out, unfortunately.

I could name several cheerleaders on here, but they've probably changed their TVF identity now that their "cautious optimism:)" seems to have been misplaced.
