The government is considering making protective face masks and hand sanitizer gels controlled goods, which would subject them to price-control by the government, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit said on Sunday (February 2).

Jurin said he would preside over an emergency meeting of the Central Committee for Prices of Goods and Services on Monday (February 3) to discuss the possibility of such a move.

“Domestic demand for face masks is normally at 30 million units per month, but during the coronavirus outbreak it could go up to 40 million,” he said.

“The domestic production capacity could go as high as 100 million per month provided factories are supplied with enough raw materials. Currently we have no problem of raw materials shortage although some of them must be imported.”

Earlier, Jurin had ordered Provincial Commerce offices nationwide to survey and monitor the markets to make sure there was no shortage or raising of prices for protective face masks and hand sanitizer gels.

Consumers can report any exploitation by manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers to the Department of Internal Trade’s hotline 1569.

Good idea.....stop the gouging.

Yeah, what about the price of Durian?  My wife says she is paying double what she was a year or so ago. Some lame excuse about the Chinese buying up most of the crop.

Just a few days ago they warned people not to 'price gouge' - it's not clearly not against the law, not at the moment.

I think we all know what will happen.

The demand will go to 30 to 40 Million masks per day, the price will rocket if the bodies start stacking up and there will be none left for months.

Surgical face masks do not prevent anyone from getting the virus, but may assist infected person from passing the virus on! Some experts even suggest that people wearing surgical masks are more likely to contract the virus from repeatedly touching their masks with infected hands.  Hand washing and basic hygiene are the best way of preventing the virus.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

Looking at the possibility.

Considering a proposal to possibly introduce.

Trying to determine.

Observing and studying.

Putting before a committee to consider.

Waiting to see.

--I'm beginning to see a pattern of behavior here.
