Confused about terminology for the new virus

Featured Replies

I thought I read an article a few days ago saying that the WHO assigned the name "novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)" to the virus and the name "Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)" to the disease caused by it, but now I can't find this article again.

Checking the who.int website just now I could not find a single mention of SARS-CoV-2 on the site itself, only three articles from scientific journals listed there that use this code. On the other hand, starting 13 FEB 2020, many websites have been using SARS-CoV-2, including

Starting on the same date, websites including the WHO site have been referring to the disease caused by this virus as the "Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)" or COVID-19 for short. No confusion about this.
