Police in Had Yai in southern Thailand are hunting for a Malaysian thief who stole 50,000 baht from two foreign tourists.

CCTV on Channel 7 showed the thief dressed in black behind a counter at a hostel on Friday.

He stole 40,000 baht from a Chinese tourist who had left it for safe-keeping.

Earlier he had stolen 10,000 baht from the room of a Japanese tourist where he also obtained a key card to let him into the hostel.

The thief was caught wiping down surfaces to clear fingerprints.

He removed the hard disk for the CCTV and one camera, reports said.

The owner of the hostel named as Suwatchai compensated the tourists out of his own pocket and warned other establishments in Had Yai, Songkhla to be on the lookout for the thief.

Is that a CCTV camera from 1984?

Such a clear picture.

Don't worry about one still taken from the CCTV, the rest of the CCTV in the link shows the thief very clearly.

Just one question - how do they know it's a Malaysian ?

The Ch7 link said it was a Malaysian tourist who had already stayed at the hostel?

There was an incident last year with CCTV showing a couple of characters stealing a bicycle from a pub; it was an old fashioned bicycle hung on the wall as part of the decorations. The culprits were identified as 'Malaysian' (few farang to blame here), when the bicycle did turn up, it was actually two locals.

Lots of Malaysians in Hat Yai, they must make up 80% of tourist numbers in the city.

The hostel owner is to be commended for putting his hand in his pocket and reimbursing the tourists, he could have just pointed to the usual small print about 'valuables stored at owner's risk'.

the tourist left the money at the front desk for safekeeping.

is the owner/manager not then responsible for it?

Well if has stayed there, his passport of Malaysian ID card will be on record so all border points will now have it, not the sharpest tool in the shed.

He can just walk across...unlikely to be stopped

Many 'day visitors' go to-and-fro w/o any papers
