webfact
Thais who worked abroad illegally banned from overseas travel By THE NATION Chatu Mongol Sonakul Labour Minister Chatu Mongol Sonakul, has ordered relevant officials to suspend overseas trips of those who possibly go abroad to work illegally. “In February, 260 people were suspended from going abroad -- 220 to South Korea, 22 to Bahrain, 8 to Oman, 5 to United Arab Emirates, 4 to Qatar, and one to India,” he said. Meanwhile, 6,156 people who worked abroad legally passed the Suvarnabhumi Labour checkpoint in the same month. “Most people travelled to Asian countries, such as Taiwan or South Korea, while 723 went to Middle East countries and 481 to European countries,” he added. South Korea is screening Thai people with more strictness, since Thais do not need a visa to visit the country. “Some Thai people were found escaping from tour groups or hotels to work illegally in South Korea,” Suchart Pornchaiwisetkul, Department of Employment’s director-general, explained. “Labourers who work illegally will not be protected by the labour law or welfare, whether they are cheated, attacked, injured, or killed,” he warned. He asked people not to immigrate illegally for work to protect the country's image as well as those of legal workers. The reason they go and work illegally in other countries is because they get so screwed over here, wages are abysmal, only the corrupt fat cats make any decent money here, what does that do for the much coveted country's image! 14 2 1

The security guy at my old apartment took a job picking fruit in Israel because it was better than sitting in front of the building all day doing nothing...but again...no desire to further his education or skills. 1

Seems like this is a task for the MoFA? Cancel all passports for these folks Add to no-fly list Restrict name changes Smart thing to do. Therefore suspect it won't really happen, and the purchased work-arounds will be available.
Popular Post KhunBENQ
So many ignorant comments about "no education". Do you have an idea what a good education costs? I am watching the effort for three grandchildren (all female). Spending about 12000 per month for two to four years in high school/university is the lower limit up here. And that is for students with excellent test results profiting from "cheap" state institutions. For the average student it is easy double the amount. And now tell the rice farmer where to get ~280'000 to 500'000 for "good education". And that is a magnitude away from high schools/universities where the hiso sent their children. 8

KhunBENQ
Silly idea to threaten instead of an amnesty. Will just make sure that the "little ghosts" will stay in hide for more years in South Korea and other places. A father of two works illegally in SK for 5(?) years to finance private school (a cheap one) for his two children. He seems them growing up via LINE.

Tayaout
Maybe it's just a chess move to prevent the illegal workers from coming back from south Korea under the amnesty program.
ChipButty
Search underway for 80 escaping Thai workers returning from South Korea Authorities are searching for about 80 Thais who arrived, in a group of 200 on four flights, at Suvarnabhumi international airport yesterday after returning from working illegally in South Korea. They managed to escape from a restricted area as they were about to be escorted to Sattahip naval base for COVID-19 screening prior to being quarantined. ChipButty
the genie is out the bottle. They say the current Italian epidemic stems from a single asymptomatic carrier who arrived from an affected area. If just five of those morons are infected and live in variously Bangkok, Khorat, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Khon Kaen then by the end of the month the country will be pretty much <deleted>d

Thailand actually has pretty good labor protection laws. The reason these "little ghosts" go abroad is because they are greedy and don't want to earn an honest day's wages on 300 Baht a day and because they "heard" countries like South Korea pay a ton of money to be a massage therapist. What they aren't told is that the cost of living is much higher over there and that they will live in squalor and many end up in debt slavery.

drbeach
Wow...I'm actually impressed by the government here. These illegal Thais definitely affect the image of all Thais who travel abroad. South Korea has almost stopped visa free visits for Thais due to the stupidity and selfishness of their fellow citizens. Back in 1996, the New Zealand government stopped visa free entry for Thais due to half of all Thai "visitors" ending up staying there and working illegally. Thailand responded by slashing the visa-free period for Kiwis down to 30 days from 90, since this meant the end of reciprocal visa-free arrangements.

Cake Monster
These illegal workers have been a thorn in the sides of both the Thai Government and the South Koran Government for many years now. The Thais dont like the image that they are Exporting " working girls "to S. Korea, and receive no benefit from them working abroad, and the S. Koreans really dont like the fact that most of the money earned by these people does no go into the Economy, and is just sent back to Thailand for whatever usage.

There are loads of people who have a good education make a good living. But he's right. The average person makes about 10,000 baht a month. If your rent is 5000, that leaves you with 5000. Then they have to send money back home, usually 2000 every month. So that leaves you with about 3000. Then after bills you barely have enough to eat.
