How to make quality fabric face masks

Fabric face masks have become increasingly popular due to the shortage of surgical ones amid the Covid-19 situation, Industry Ministry permanent secretary Kobchai Sangsitthisawat said today (March 9).

 

“To ensure the quality of fabric face masks being manufactured and sold in the market, the Industry Ministry has announced standards regarding the specification of fabrics as follows:

 

1) The fabric can either be made by knitting or weaving natural, synthetic or mixed fibres. This does not include non-woven materials.

 

2) The fabric must be clean, free of unwanted odour or printed patterns, have a soft surface and should not cause skin irritation.

 

3) The fabric surface must be free of defects that could compromise safety, such as splits, tears or holes.

 

4) Its weight must be in the range of 80-220 grammes per square metre.

 

5) Azo dye content that gives aromatic amine must not exceed 30mg per kg (except for white and undyed fabric), while the formaldehyde content must not exceed 70mg per kg. The durability against colour wash-out must be higher than level 3, according to Thai Industrial Standard test number 121, volume 3.

“Any manufacturer who follows these standards can put the phrase ‘manufactured according to standards announced by the Industry Ministry’ on the product’s packaging,” Kobchai said. “However, putting such a phrase on the product also signifies that the manufacturer agrees to allow ministry officials to inspect the quality of the product at their facilities.

 

“These standards are just a suggestion for making quality fabric face masks and therefore are not enforced by law,” Kobchai added. “For further information, please contact the Industry Ministry’s Textile Development Institute via tel 0-2713-5492-9 ext. 512-513."

They are probably as ineffective as the dust masks commonly worn.

This is irrelevant.

There is none available for the general public. I am still using the one I had from 4 weeks ago - it's beginning to chuck up! So I will wash it and see what happens....

Maybe the government could commandeer the 200,000,000 face masks that 'someone' was preparing to sell to China.

The 'someone' who is linked to a Government official, you know - but knows nothing.

It would be very interesting to discover how you accumulate 200,000,000 masks together in such a short time.

But we, the public, can't find them for love nor money!

Allegations that an aide to a minister was involved with a mask profiteer has lent weight to suspicions. Though the minister has denied these allegations, the department needs to dig deeper to find out why face masks have disappeared from the market. Is it incompetence, corruption or plain theft?

The Covid-19 outbreak is a crisis and it's critical the department fulfil its duties to health workers and the public by ensuring there is an adequate supply of masks and that they can be bought at reasonable prices.
