EC to file a criminal charge against Thanathorn

The Election Commission (EC) has resolved to press a criminal charge against Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, former leader of the dissolved Future Forward Party (FWP), at Thungsonghong Police Station for applying to become a member of Parliament in the March 2019 election while holding shares in a media company.

The decision was made at a meeting of the EC board, a source revealed on Tuesday (March 10).

The EC had stated earlier that Thanathorn’s shareholding in V-Luck media violated Section 151 of the election law, which stipulates that a person who was knowingly not qualified shall be fined Bt20,000 to Bt200,000 or face one to 10 years of imprisonment if he applied to become a member of Parliament. If found guilty, Thanathorn will also have his right to vote revoked for 20 years.

The Constitutional Court ruled on November 20, 2019 to terminate Thanathorn’s membership of the House of Representatives due to his shareholding in the media business, V-Luck Media.

The source also revealed that the motion to file a criminal case against Thanathorn had been presented to the EC board at least three times since the court’s verdict. However, the board did not approve the filing until now. It has ordered its officials to find more evidence to support the case since a criminal case can be appealed in three different courts.

Thanathorn is not the first March 2019 election candidate against whom the EC has pressed charges. Earlier, the EC had filed cases against candidates who had applied to become members of Parliament after having been a member of a political party for less than 90 days before the election date, in violation of the election law.

In the interests of being fair to all parties I am sure that the EC will soon be pressing charges against those 40 mp's in the Govt also accused of holding media shares.

Unbelievable thats what it is, these clowns seem determined to drag Thailand into serious civil unrest. Or maybe that is their plan, create unrest, then use the army to quell it, another coup bei

More like a backwards trajectory.

Careful, elites. He doesn't seem like the kinda person who will allow you to let him run off overseas. You may have to actually stick him prison for bogus charges. Then you'll have yourself a huge problem and a catalyst for an uprising.

Don't underestimate your opponent.

They really have to be very afraid of him to come up with such initiatives which are totally counterproductive.
The undecided who voted for other political parties will join the 6 million who support it.
You should know that very many adults who are often the parents of young students, voted for him.
When I asked my wife for whom she was going to vote, I imagined that she was going to answer me: for the party close to Thaksin; well no it was for Thanathorn

The army is called Tengmo in Thailand;
green outside but red inside.

And who would have thought it would be anything different coming from the cancerous regime. I called this from day one. Only problem is those top guys have self immunity and are untouchables or they would have been in prison a long long time ago.

Another truly sad day for Thailand.

Reading a lot about people who were huge Prayut fans who are now turning their backs on him. At first you think it's good and these people have been enlightened, only to find out that what they really want is another coup. Basically, they fear Prayut's incompetence is inadvertently leading Thailand more towards democracy. And that's most definitely not what the rich and powerful here want.

If (when) the "wheels come off" all the self granted immunity in the world will not help them. It will end in frantic convoys of limousines to the airport, or worse...

Shows their stupidity really. Many in the country are already very angry about Future Forward being spuriously dissolved. Having another pop at Thanathorn is only likely to increase the anti government sentiment further.

  • Popular Post

I am puzzled why Thanathorn has not had a fatal accident yet.

Talk about double jeopardy, and continuing punishment for the same offense.  First to be stripped of a position, then having your party dissolved, and now going after you to put you in jail for all the same things.  Lets not hold back, keep looking and you can keep persecuting and prosecuting for the same things, I am sure there are more codes they can dig up.  What a fricking Sham.....

It is sad how Thailand is suppressed by a small elite.
But as long as condemned drug dealers, people with unexplained wealth and unelected People are allowed in the in parliament, all is well.

They always display an incredible level of vengefulness against those of their own who break the omerta-their code of conduct..

Keeping going EC boys!

You will make a martyr of him at this rate.

It´s good, that the military doesn´t own TV and radio stations. Oh wait...????

I have been here for nearly 20 years and I've never even thought or said this but I personally think this is the beginning of the end for the old way. I think the youth and young professionals of this country are sick and tired of the corruption and to them it just doesn't compute  in their brains. They just won't accept it because they now know different mainly due to the internet and overseas studies. Society usually evolves with generations and that generation is now all 50years up..coming to and end.

IMHO that the next coup has already been planned, signed and sealed and is now just waiting for a time slot to fit it into.

In the age of the internet, it's harder to keep people in the dark. Social media is a mainstay of life in Thailand now. They know they can't just block Facebook, etc. as people really would rise up. It's only going to get harder for the elite to maintain their ways. It may take a while but democracy will win out.

Self immunity only lasts if the incoming people and corruption allows it.

Purely hypothetical, but just suppose FFP had won the election outright. Among the first things they would probably scrap the amnesties and the 2019 constitution, substitute that one for the 1997 constitution while a new one is being written with inputs from the public and the military only getting 1% input or less.

Sounds fantastic; but the guns!

2-3 days one of the governing gang members did say they should/would/will start to obey the rule of law... don't hold up your breath 555

Good thing the military has no media interests that may be questioned.

Well I don't think we expected must else. After all, it was only this week the EC received a pay rise. If what is being said online (and not the stuff posted on TV) is to be believed then a certain establishment is absolutely paranoid about Thanatorn revolutionising this country and are clinging on to anything they can.

It might take decades, but I cannot wait for the day when people like him finally change this place.

Don't underestimate your opponent.

You do bring up a good point inasmuch as so many of Thailand's former 'leaders' have opted to do a runner when faced with court and jail and even the most talented and educated dissenters tend to self-exile.

What do you consider as evidence that Thanathorn is made of sterner stuff here and a force to be reckoned with?

Giving people the benefit of the doubt and good faith. Also hope.

I thinks it's called "hopeful thinking"! But seems like we're gonna find out sooner rather than later.
