"Paveena - Angel of the Poor" to the rescue in case of battered grandmother

Well known social welfare activist Paveena Hongsakul has intervened in the case of a grandmother who was battered by her own daughter.

A Facebook post on the page of "Nicha May" showed a video clip of a desperate old lady on the ground outside a house with a front gate smashed down.

The written post suggested that the police, local authorities, and government watchdog Damrongtham had all failed to act. This time she had been attacked by her drunk daughter with a wooden broom.

Now Paveena - often called the Angel of the Poor - has stepped in.

The foundation that bears her name has contacted the authorities in Phitsanulok in northern Thailand recommending that the old lady is taken into care to avoid further trouble.

Paveena is the sister of Apasra Hongsakul who was crowned Thailand's first Miss Universe in 1965.

Has anyone responded to the recommendation?

Assuming this is true, it's a truly horrible indictment of Thai police and local governments in general. But I'm sure most on these forums won't be surprised.

Very true and very sad. One of the tenets of Thai society that I greatly admired when I first came here was respect and care for one's family / elders. For many, seems to be gone now.

She is a true hero.

Keep up the good work.

I met her once at a conference in Malaysia. She really is a very nice lady. No airs and graces, friendly and clearly someone who cares and has done for a longtime.

Police won't do anything without financial recompense other than the monthly wage they are paid to do something.
