I have a friend who is being treated in a government hospital in an upcountry province. They have told her she must pay for all treatment because she's not registered at that particular hospital. Her designated hospital , where she's registered under the government health scheme, is in Bangkok.

She and her family are poor and have very limited funds.

What are her options?

She could tell the hospital to log on to her website and make an application for payment, just as the government has done for the poor !!

Seriously, I don't know how that system works but I was under the impression they were covered anywhere in Thailand ??

As I recall only emergency treatment is free of charge at anywhere other than the patients designated hospital, once stabilized the patient is I believe then required to have any follow up consultations or work done at their designated hospital...how the refund process works I don't know.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

She's being treated for Covid-19, so I guess you could say that's an emergency.

She's lived upcountry for the past several months but never got round to re registering (Stupid, I know).

She visited Bangkok a few weeks ago and this is when she believes she picked up the virus. Fortunately, I didn't see her.

Obviously, she needs to re register at her local hospital but are they likely to do that, now that she has already been admitted and is undergoing treatment?

Are they under any obligation to accept her?

In a medical emergency where  person is unable to safely be transferred they can be treated at any government hospital.

COVID is unchartered territory as a person could be stable enough for transfer but not feasible to transfer owing to infection concerns etc

If her registration is under the "30 baht" scheme She should call the NHSO tomorrow for advice/assistance. Call center 1330   https://www.nhso.go.th/

If she is under Social Security then call SS head office
