New measures to control contagion in Bangkok

Bangkok governor Asawin Kwanmuang on Wednesday (April 1) issued additional measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, which includes shutting convenience stores from midnight to 5am as of Thursday (April 2). The governor also sought cooperation from street vendors.

 

He made the announcement after meeting with the Bangkok Communicable Disease Committee on Wednesday.

 

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said on Wednesday that eateries and convenience stores will be closed from midnight to 5am from April 2 to 30.

 

However, he denied reports that the BMA was considering a citywide lockdown.

that's the best time to shop with fewer customers about, and no lines at the registers.

Remember it is now April Fools Day.  The only article on this side of the big water I saw was for additional shop closures from Midnight to 5 am, and nothing else.....

Stops skint people turning up in the middle of the night and robbing them. Protects the workers from violence.

Our park (more of a small courtyard with a few tables and swingset) is still open but they closed the pool and fitness center, so I eat instead

Incredibly, I managed to work that much out (aren't eateries closed anyway?).

 

But surely they have a whole raft of "measures" that they are ready to roll out.

Eateries can do take a way or delivery only. Think they have a couple of things lined up but don't know the details.

I haven't been to 7 in a while in the middle of the night, but when I did go in the past, the shop was full of people in pajamas, reading magazines and chit chatting near the cashier. It looked like a middle of the night hang-out place for those who couldn't sleep or didn't have aircon at home so they could cool down in the shop. If it's still like that, I can fully understand why they want to shut them at night.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - The Thai capital of Bangkok will close all parks as it tightens measures to rein in a coronavirus pandemic by limiting people's movements, a city hall spokesman said on Wednesday.

 

Nearly half of the 1,771 infections in the southeast Asian nation are in Bangkok, government data shows. Thailand announced 120 new cases on Wednesday, along with two deaths that took its toll to 12.

 

Apart from closing public and private parks, Bangkok's new restrictions, which take effect from midnight, include curbs on convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants and street food stalls, which will operate from 5 a.m. to midnight only.

 

"We understand that the measures will inconvenience you, but please understand that we need to limit social gatherings and have people stay home as much as possible," said Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesman of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

 

The measures will continue for the duration of an emergency decree issued last week that runs until April 30.

 

Since late March, Bangkok has ordered the closure of shopping malls, schools, and entertainment venues, and limited restaurant operations to takeaway and delivery.

 

Last week, the closures were widened to facilities such as libraries, museums, playgrounds, sporting grounds, meeting halls, childcare centres and beauty clinics.

 

Governors of other Thai provinces have also imposed curbs on people's movement, with Bangkok's neighbouring province of Nonthaburi imposing a curfew from midnight to dawn.

 

The resort island of Phuket, which has closed since Monday all points of entry by land and sea, will also close its airport from April 10 to April 30.

I thought April Fool’s jokes about the virus were banned :-)

Around 8 pm I walked through the big Din Dang market on Thanon Pracha Songkhro. A lot of the stalls usually in the middle of that large space are gone, but a whole lot are still there, and that interior market path going away from the main street at a 90 degree angle is as full of food vendors and people walking close together as ever. I looked at a couple of still live fish lying in a dry pan gasping with their gills and hoped that won't be how I'll end up.

BMA orders capital’s convenience stores to close from midnight until 5am

 

 

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has reduced the opening hours of convenience stores, food shops and stalls by ordering them to close from midnight to 5am, from Thursday until end of April.

 

Spokesman for City Hall, Pol Captain Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, said today that all public and private parks in communities, housing estates and condos will also be closed from tomorrow until April 30th, because people have been using these open spaces for social gatherings or other group activities.

 

Official document services, usually performed at district offices, will also be suspended, except for the issuance of birth and death certificates, registrations of marriage, issuance of divorce certificates and approval of household certificate and ID card copies.

 

For expired ID cards, the Interior Ministry has extended their validity until the end of July 2020. Rental fees, paid by vendors in 10 markets owned by City Hall, will be waived from March until the situation has returned to normal.

Perhaps consider implementing nationwide partial-lockdown like what neighbouring Malaysia is doing? Based on accounts from Malaysian friends, it seems to be working. A bit of an inconvenience, but the spread seems to be slowing down. In fact, I read somewhere the international community recognised Malaysia's efforts as one of the best they've come across. The partial-lockdown is strictly enforced and policed. Oh wait... 'enforcement' and 'policing'... in Thailand... never mind, forget it. Forget everything I just said.

How many Virus cases have occurred in Parks?? ZERO, ZILCH, NONE!!

Why close a place where people exercise in fresh air & open space with little contact if any w/ other people!!

What Stupidity!!! 

Just saw a video recorded in Lumphini park yesterday. People jogging close or passing each other and not wearing masks.

the people are out in Open air; not a closed environment like a Gym or other facility!!

As said, how many cases of Virus have occurred in Parks???
