Bridge on Genoa to Florence road collapses, two vehicles involved

MILAN (Reuters) - A bridge on a normally busy road in northern Italy collapsed on Wednesday but only two drivers were caught up in the chaos, the fire brigade said, as the coronavirus lockdown has largely halted traffic.

 

A spokesman for the fire brigade said the 260 metre bridge near the town of Aulla, roughly midway between Genoa and Florence, in the northern tip of Tuscany, collapsed at 10:25 a.m. (0825 GMT).

 

The lockdown imposed by the government to cope with the coronavirus emergency has cut traffic in the whole country, including on the road, known as the SS330.

 

A team of the fire brigade were still on site, the spokesman added. Two drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, he added.

 

The bridge was previously managed by provincial authorities and was then put under the management of ANAS, a company controlled by state-owned railway group Ferrovie dello Stato.

 

Transport Minister Paola De Micheli said that she had requested ANAS provide a detailed report.

 

Forty-three people were killed in August 2018 when a when a viaduct in the port town of Genoa and operated by infrastructure group Atlantia <ATL.MI> gave way.

Roman concrete has lasted 2 millennia & still good. Modern concrete lasts 30 or 50 years if you're lucky.

Beautiful country but sadly one of the poor men of Europe. Get out of the rich areas and Italy is poor and lives on the endless credit line. A fragile volatile economy and political system.

During Roman times they did not have the mafia taking their cut of projects and therefore reducing the cement content in the concrete!

I've had four alfas, 1971 to 1984 models. One, an alfasud, almost rotted to pieces thanks to the low quality Russian steel used in it. Rebuilt the engine in one of those two times and the gearbox five times. Gotta love those second gear synchro rings.

 

Fun to drive, though. Most things Italian are fun.

I think all but ice cream predate modern Italy. Romans were at the top of their game, until Commodus screwed it up and it all went slowly to hell. Mussolini managed to screw up the modern times. Gotta love those fascists and their commie cousins.

Actually they've studied it recently and have found a different overall composition of the concrete. But yeah, obviously no mafia 2 millenia ago.
