The deputy governor of Krabi province has called on residents of Phi Phi Island to allow the 300 or so foreign tourists to continue staying on the island so the spread of Covid-19 can be contained.

Deputy governor Somkuan Khan-ngern met the villagers on Thursday (April 9) after learning that they were concerned about tourists spreading the virus.

“We spoke at length about this issue and finally the villagers agreed to let the tourists stay until the end of their vacation,” he said, adding that Phi Phi was ideal for containing tourists instead of having them be quarantined in hotels on the mainland.

“The Phi Phi hospital has an intensive screening process for tourists and is ready to conduct further tests to gain local people’s confidence,” he said.

“Since foreigners’ way of life is different from that of Thai people and they do not like wearing masks, we have called on the island’s police to strictly enforce the law,” he said, adding that residents have been urged not to panic.

“Hotels that do not have guests have been urged to close temporarily. Krabi province now has 16 Covid-19 patients, with the two newest cases found in Koh Lanta district,” he said.

let me interpret what is really being said

we don't want the tourists staying because there is nowhere open for them to spend money so what is the point - send them somewhere else

Or, do they have money? how could we get it?

Adhere to the law, if a stupid foreigner does not wear a mask they're kicked out.

Simple as that!

I will certainly choose to spend my hard earned $$ elsewhere in future.

Nobody really cares though, most people do not know the most obvious things when planning their holiday to Thailand.
Each year will have new ones being interested to go, new retirees still decide to come etc etc. At the end, 7.8 billion on a planet is a lot of prospects to scam one day.

Same reason the girl scam keeps working, always new suckers, nothing will change as long that works. Spending it elsewhere, but where? Nothing in this continent that will be much different or nicer, likely even have to give up on many things in neighbouring countries. Western countries are <deleted> too, South America etc. too unstable. Have been saying the same as you so many times in the past, but actually no place is like 'home' = Thailand.

The fewer bad things here are minor compared to the stuff elsewhere. Lately veel more comfortable around a bit ignorant Thais than to be around full crazy westerners + middle east / northern African illegal immigrants and stabbing gangsters, back home. Let alone if choosing Brazil or Venezuela etc.

Will they ensure a cheap reliable supply of quality masks for these tourists ? Or are masks just for Thias to buy ?

The tourists can be given a sewing machine each and the raw materials, and they can  begin production undersupervision , achieving a predetrmined number of masks each day.
