Thailand could be the 1st country to announce to be "free covid-19 country" before end of april. That annoucement could be a bomb and boost the tourism this summer ! (with the condition to test tourists at the airport) Remember how many time some people predicted the death of Pattaya ! It's just making the poor even poorer, and sacrificing the poorest. Disgusting to see the jokes coming up here about cheap bargains becoming available from the desperate selling of so many now. Instead of snitching around about who's wearing a mask or not and who is daring to leave his room to get some daylight, and calling the Covid police, why not thinking about helping these numerous victims of the lockdown? starting with financial planning after its all over

Truly terrible that the system put in place to help the needy is proving to be simply unfit for purpose. My gf and kids are lucky that I am living here and can help them. But she applied for the 5k baht the day it went online, still not a word. Thai people deserve better than this. There was a great news update on The Nation news channel, on telly yesterday. With a big screen in the background, cartoons, spitting image style. On top all of the gov team ... showing an empty wallet. Below, a huge pile of Baht's, under the table .... The news guy also said something about the top ... tee noon noon, far away I hope he's back today on TV ... finally Thai people start to speak up, in public, on telly! Something I haven't seen since I can think about ... very refreshing to see the Thai's speak up. Not even sure I can say this in public, but since it was on public Thai TV ... I guess it's ok to talk about it? Edited April 13, 2020 by RedPill 8

Popular Post Kerryd
I think it will take awhile before tourism rebounds here, for the simple fact that half (or more) of the world's population is unemployed now. All the people who would have come there, or were planning to in the near future, are currently burning through their savings and what meagre stipends they can get from the government (if any). When things finally get back to normal, one of the first things that will happen is gas and oil prices will skyrocket (they aren't stupid - they know demand will spike). People will start going back to work and are probably going to be more concerned about paying back owed money, replenishing savings and getting back to a normal life than they will about travelling anywhere. Especially when fuel prices jump and airline tickets (naturally) jump as well. Think about it. You've just gone through 3-4 (or more) months scraping by on potato soup and bread crusts (figuratively for some, literally for others). Things start getting back to normal. You go back to work. Are you really going to walk into the boss's office the next day, ask for an advance and time off to go to Thailand for 2 weeks to party ? You are probably going to be working your butt off for the next year or more just to try and get back to where you were before the crisis. Then you can start putting some money away and planning for a future trip. I seriously doubt that if the crisis ended on 30 April or 15 May (for example) that a month later they'd be back to 3 million arrivals a month (or double that like the Tourism Minister predicted would happen after Songkran washed the virus away). 20

That is very true.. People who are laid off now in the West will be using their holiday pay and (in some cases) their Long Service leave to survive. There will be precious little money left over for a destination which was,in any case, catastrophically declining in popularity. Not even the transmarine Thai really wish to return. Popular Post natway09
These are part of the massive "unregulated" workforce in Thailand who are just going to be shunned by the Government when it comes to even a Bht 5,000 handout. It is a very sad fact of life that unless you have a social security number you fly under the welfare radar. 6

The prolonged lockdown will cause the financial system to collapse, hyperinflation will ruin your savings and financial institutions collapsing ruin your pension. There will be no new jobs to get and we will all be depending on the government to provide us meager food allowances. Just how governments like it, a dependent population is a obedient population. You would like to think that all this was worth it, and that there is real solid scientific evidence that says this was worth it, however after 4 months of epidemic, all i see is media hype and twisting of figures to justify utterly destroying our society. Popular Post Ketyo
Countries are going to have to learn to live with this virus for many months until a cure or a vaccine is available. They will need to open up some economic activity while maintaining the levels of hospital admissions below what the health service can cope with. If they don't open up the economy a bit people's needs for food and a little money will lead to serious social disorder. But the backwards Thai authorities here will not be able to handle re-opening. They will no be able to handle the subtleties of allowing some activities and not others. The Authorities under the army are small minded, uneducated "Stoppers". They only know how to stop people and control people. Thailand will suffer more than other countries as they keep blanket controls on for too long leading to disorder. They will not be able to handle a gradual sector-wise, region-wise, product-wise re-opening. And my guess is that the poor Thais and small businesses and informal economy will suffer most.
