Why did you guys chose to live in Thailand but not Australia?

Australia doesn't have free medical, it's a separate tax (Medicare levy), on top of already high taxes.

Wrong. Not everyone pays the levy, which pisses me off. People on our generous benefits do not pay for example, and some of them are proud 3rd generation bludgers...

There is a couple of details posters seem to be overlooking.

Medicare and the public hospital system is free, yes. However, if one is looking at any chronic condition requiring what is called elective surgery, be prepared for a long wait. A guy I used to work with had to wait 18 months for a hip replacement, in pain all the way. If he had private health cover, he could have had it done in a private hospital within a month.

The other issue is a public hospital vs a private hospital. The publics are overworked, have inexperienced doctors at the front line, and putting it bluntly are giant petri dishes. Private hospitals won't get patients if they are substandard, so they have to be good.

I have top level private cover, and there is no way I would leave it.

Disagree.

You can pay an intermediate fee to 'jump the queue' if you want and is reasonably priced.

The publics are overworked, have inexperienced doctors at the front line, and putting it bluntly are giant petri dishes

Yes I agree they are overworked. The rest is utter <deleted>. Where do you think Doctors go to learn to be doctors ? And who do you think teaches them ? Having worked for QLD Health for many years I can say your statements lack merit and any real knowledge.

And to put it into some prospective, I was in a private hospital last year for a double knee replacement. The care I received was sub standard and utterly negligent. After hours of no help 1 review on the hospital website and they could not do enough for me.... I had the customer service manager at my bedside within the hour, he gave me his private number....

I know nothing about Queensland Health. I'm speaking from experience with the Victorian system, hospitals such as Frankston, Western General and Monash.

Monash is so bad soiled sheets are re-used. Frankston is a disaster zone, young doctors there are s##t-scared of making a decision. Worst hospital in Victoria to go to in a genuine emergency, overrun by druggies and drunks. A surgeon at Western General died as the result of an assault by a patient. In contrast, my regular private hospital of Beleura is clean, well run and I am well cared for.

IMO you were probably one of those health bureaucrats in a nice air-conditioned office that only visited the coalface when it was quiet. How did Jayant Patel slip through your fine net? Next time you go to hospital, ask them to remove your foot from your mouth.

Things which stand out as cheaper in Australia are the weekly shop,

I take it your weekly shop includes expensive imported western food. You can't expect me to believe that fried rice chicken is more expensive in LOS than Oz.

Food is far cheaper in LOS. PERIOD.

It's free if you are happy to be put on a waiting list for non-emergency treatment and take whatever doctor is available, and dental treatment costs are prohibitive.

Actually the systems quite good now....I was offered an operation within 10 days of being seen by a specialist....not life threatening.....

Most guys end up in Thailand for the pussy, either they marry it or are chasing it in some form or other, once you move past that its a <deleted>ty dirty old hole, <deleted> beaches like really as a land scape AU kills if for dead....

I did enjoy living there for a time for the above reasons once you move on from that theres little attraction....

Beaches in LOS really were wonderful back in the mid 90s, before they ruined them for the flashpackers. Hut with bathroom right on the sand for 300 baht. Bliss.

I haven't seen anything like a decent beach in Thailand....over rated big time, then again we Aussies dont normally have deck chairs on our beaches, St Kilda Beach is probably the most ordinary in AU with leave's the best over there for dead....Pussy is the attraction for most guys over there....

Been here 10 years, will never go back to Oz, and I don't need to justify my reasons to anybody.

Obviously either came too late or haven't seen many beaches in LOS.

You cant be Australian or have LOW standards.

Well...ideally I would like to spend my time in both countries-I regard them as chalk and cheese as cultures-but alas that is not to be as I am deemed not fit to fly..

I do spend time talking to my Thai family virtually everyday-tho' my wife is with me at the moment.I have handed over the house to my DIL on the proviso that she looks after my dogs which she is doing very well.

I have never had a mind much given to dualism and I find both countries interesting and exciting in their own unique ways.

Two of my own photos,

1.Thailand

2.Australia
