U.S. judge denies bid by Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone for new trial

(Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday denied a bid for a new trial by U.S. President Donald Trump's longtime friend and adviser Roger Stone after the veteran Republican operative accused the jury forewoman of being tainted by political bias.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected Stone's claim that the forewoman was biased against Trump and therefore could not be impartial in deciding Stone's guilt or innocence during the trial.

"(T)here is zero evidence of 'explicit bias' against Stone, and defendant’s attempts to gain a new trial based on implied or inferred bias fail," Jackson said in an 81-page decision.

Jackson sentenced Stone on Feb. 20 to three years and four months in prison after a 12-person jury convicted him on Nov. 15 on seven counts of obstruction of justice, witness tampering and lying to lawmakers investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

The charges stemmed from former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry that documented Moscow's meddling to boost Trump's candidacy and detailed numerous contacts between Trump associates and Russians.

Stone was convicted of lying to the House of Representative Intelligence Committee about his attempts to contact WikiLeaks, the website that released damaging emails about Hillary Clinton, Trump's 2016 Democratic election rival, that U.S. intelligence officials have concluded were stolen by Russian hackers.

With his motion for a new trial denied, Stone is expected to ask an appeals court to throw out his conviction. He has 14 days to do so.

Don’t pin your hope on that.

Trump will keep his pardon powder dry for himself and perhaps for his daughter.

Stone is no longer useful to Trump and the last thing Trump needs is Stone stripped of his 5th Amendment rights.

Stone will be left to rot.

With the virus being virtually the only news topic on the planet, one can't help thinking of mortality: your own, and everyone else's.

If something should happen to the Pardoner-in-Chief (especially prior to the election) a lot of these vermin may consider the black capsule option.

But on the other hand some of these con artists have been getting away with it for so long, like jolly Roger here, so they hold out the hope the con may eventually work.

I BEG your pardon?

Amusing however to see the usual suspects on here dip their pens in venom and bare their blood-stained teeth and seethe with hatred, totally irrational hatred.

But I have to admit, I enjoy these instant demonstrations of their utter enslavement to the notion that it really really matters who is the POTUS at any particular time!!!

Pretty sure even Tony Soprano didn’t have as many ‘friends and colleagues’ in jail as Trump. Hmmmmmm - Oh, but wait. It’s a Democrat conspiracy.

What will Ivanka need a pardon for? And why do you seem to think there is some very low limit of pardons a president can issue? Very strange logic (if any) you have presented. Do tell.

Ivanka will need a pardon for her crimes under the ‘Foreign Corrupt Practices Act’.

I’m not at all sure what you are on about with the rest of your post.

OK, so you've conceded my point on your insinuation there is some limit to the number of pardons a president can realistically grant. Good for you.

Now on to the "Foreign Corrupt Practices Act". You sure you want to go there, Hunter?

Dear Ol Tug: it's very rarely that I can fathom what it is exactly you are trying to say (but at least I try), so please try and explain to my slow aging brain what this "safe spot" that you mention IS.  Is my English clear enough to elicit a clear response from you.

I will of course not hold my breath.

Rumblings that trump will grant clemency/pardon. Probably Friday night, late.

GOP operative Roger Stone begs Trump for pardon or sentence commutation as prison surrender looms

Faced with an order to report to prison next week, longtime Republican operative Roger Stone on Tuesday begged President Donald Trump for either a pardon or a commutation of his 40-month criminal sentence.

“I want the president to know that I have exhausted all my legal remedies and that only an act of clemency will provide justice in my case and save my life!” Stone said in a text message to Bloomberg reporters, according to a news story by the outlet.

I doubt Trump will be so eager to strip Stone of his Fifth Amendment rights.

Yeah, rumblings include talk of a "Commutation" rather than a pardon.

Not sure what that means going forward?

In an interview with journalist Howard Fineman, this is what Stone said, related to his stated hope that his sentence is commuted:

“He (45) knows I was under enormous pressure to turn on him. It would have eased my situation considerably. But I didn’t.”

That statement should make every real American either scared or ashamed, as it suggests many things:

-45 is guilty and I know it, but I kept my mouth shut so he owes me

-I know stuff I refused to spill, which means I purposely subverted the legal system, and that should come with a reward

I believe the the US is preparing to replace the stars on the American flag with 50 little bananas.

-------

As expected, media is now reporting that on a Friday night, 45 just commuted Stone's sentence.

Crime DOES pay.

This kind of Presidential behavior is akin to authoritarian 3rd world countries.

your funny!  For those of you who are from distance lands ! The office of president has constitutional power to pardon or commute anybody convicted  on federal charges !  These charges and convictions were all centered around the Russian hoax scandal!

The POTUS probably figures why should Stone be punished while the very same  prosecutors who put him there are under criminal investigation lol

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a3xkxj/bill-barr-picked-a-mueller-like-prosecutor-to-investigate-the-mueller-probe

The president’s authority to pardon rests in the U.S. Constitution, which gives presidents nearly unfettered power to forgive federal crimes or shorten sentences for those crimes.
