Media in Pattaya reported that huge crowds of needy people queued this morning after the owners of the Rom Pho fresh food market started handing out 200 baht and drinks.

The move was meant to help alleviate the suffering of people who are out of work and who have no income.

Pattaya - now in effective lockdown - has been hit particularly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many have lost jobs particularly in the tourist industry that has been obliterated due to the crisis.

Pictures on Sophon Cable TV showed hundreds of people waiting in line at the market on Sai 2 Road in Jomtien this morning.

Executive for the market Somsak Seekhram said charitable work was something that his family have always done.

This time he had 500,000 baht to hand out.

Many posters on Facebook praised the family's philanthropy.

Seeing the numbers of people queuing up for 200 Baht gives you an indication of the financial impact this has had on the town. Big thumbs up for the owner of Rumpho market for his generosity, though I

  • Good on him.

Is this free handout in addition to the 15,000 baht they are all going to recieve from the generous government? ????

I really believe the government should be mobilising the army to set up field kitchens to keep people fed, especially if they are unable to dish out the monthly 5,000 to the huge numbers in need.

There is no social distancing at any of the street markets  in East Pattaya  especially the big market on Soi Siam Country Club which is very busy everyday hundreds of people  zero  social distancing..

Nice gesture but the in-line distancing! Oh dear. I hope they are not infectious.

not to worry, the government thinks by opening everything on 1st May all this will go away 555, they are about to get a huge awakening, none of this goes away until tourists come back which is at least 12 months away

I know Thailand has a lot of manufacturing jobs and other stuff ????, but I'm curious to hear from people on this forum who claim that tourist dollars are not that important to Thai economy.

In Pattaya and Jomtiem it is very important.

Nationally it used to account for 20% in 2019, and was climbing. Not only tourism is suffering.

Soi Buakhao had a few hundred queuing up an hour ago, more and more every day

Some people with too much time on their hands seem to think that trolling is a good way to relieve boredom.

Have you bothered to look at pictures of markets anywhere else in the world?

FYI, there is no social distancing at any market in the world, because that is nearly impossible, and that is also why they are closed in most countries.

In Thailand closing them down is no option though, because people would die from hunger

If you are starving you think they care about that nonsense.

True. What annoys me though, is that there is not even an ATTEMPT to maintain social distancing. Long queues for free food and and now a money handout with hundreds clumped together. No one taking responsibility for that. Then what is the use of a lockdown? There are posters who maintain that authorities are doing a good job. No they are not. The usual inconsistency.

I don’t think anyone on this forum would want to see this happening to a fellow human . Having to queue for hours for a few hundred baht to feed themselves ☹️ Hits home for me the divide  between filthy rich Thais in which there is plenty and the one pay cheque away from poverty people and there is plenty of them too ! Saddens me big time

Exactly......If you open your business 24/7 and have no customers its like not opening your business at all..

So the lockdown idea worked well then? You just end up killing your own people. Good move.  Actually, it was a stupid unworkable idea from the start.   Pattaya is not London, or New York, nor even Bangkok.

Without tourist Pattaya is a lost cause....I would guess Pattaya depends on tourism about 80-85%...

Where is the parallel story for the Norwegian church? Similar queues yesterday.

They handed out 700 food parcels yesterday. Hoping for 1500 next Thursday.

Worse - if open you have more bills to pay: electric for example. If no customers to cover those costs, you're losing even more than by staying closed!

This <deleted> shouldn't ever be happening if the government actually tried supporting the Thai people!

And as for philanthropy amongst the uber rich in this country.....greed would never allow them to part with one satang to help the poor

They'll make the people beg them and wait for the social media outcry before offering any help just to let them know whose boss. Then we'll get the media images of how generous the army is with many photo ops for those generous generals.Similar to what's happening in this story.
