SURVEY: Alcohol ban -- worth it or not?

Thailand has instituted a wide-ranging ban on the sale of alcohol.   In your opinion, do you believe this ban is worth the effort.   Chose the option that best fits your opinion.

Missing a 3rd option: Neutral.

For us in the third group, one can see the pros of a ban, less domestic violence, less crime.

However one also acknowledge that many are obviously in need of their daily alcohol comsumtion, something the many posts here on TVF has clearly demonstrated.

 

Another poll idea: beach closing and ban.

In my mind the extension of the ban is more about a display of power instead of  any benefit to public health in the current  situation.

There is no medical reason for the ban with regard to coronavirus.  In fact I know of no other country that has imposed such a ban.

 

If it’s not medical it can only be a show of power.  Maybe the temperance religious maniacs have got to uncle tu.

 

The government must be hurting through no excise income.

I am surprised the rich Chang/Leo families are not putting pressure on the Government to lift the ban. Must be costing them a lot.

Wouldn't be surprised if Chonburi removed alcohol ban tomorrow monday. A welcome U-turn for many.

Alcohol Ban could also be because they want to avoid anarchy ideas born and fuelled by alcohol. Anyway it looks like we  will likely see many bans lifted by 1 May.

Alcohol was one of the few reliefs people could get during this and they stopped it. Stopping alcohol was another sledgehammer nut thing and like everything else will cost jobs

I can get by without a drink, but, what irritates me the most about this ban is the fact that there doesn't seem to be any evidence linking the consumption of alcohol with the spread of the virus. I can't help but feel that some anti-alcohol fanatic pulled this ban out of his behind based on emotions rather than on medical research. Never a good way to make a decision. 

 

Some people have floated the argument that this will reduce violence in the home. What a load of triffle that is! People who are aggressive by nature, will always be aggressive - sober or intoxicated. Those people need anger management therapy.

Phillipines has a ban also...it's always been about the worry of civil unrest, never health or Songran...poverty and alcohol don't mix in poor countries such as Thailand

I can see the benefit in terms of reducing the potential social gathering through Songkran, but not beyond it.

It seemed to be a kind of knee jerk reaction, with provincial governors trying to outdo themselves in terms of strictness.

I had seen the writing on the wall, so well and truly stocked up in advance, and it still seems easily available out there for those who look, so all in all, a waste of time really.

 It is difficult for me to have an objective opinion because I do not drink a drop of alcohol, not by philosophy but given my (great) age I still exercise every day I continue to learn Thai and I do some meditation also every day, for all these reasons the alcohol is not very good so I eliminated it! 
I could, therefore, say that I am not concerned and that I do not care, which would be selfish and silly, besides, I think that this will pose a serious problem for real alcoholics, and whether I defend or criticise them does not change the problem that it will create indidually and socially
Then what about the ordinary people who drink one or two beers for pleasure, which before was my case. they will be punished for nothing.

It is not however impossible that this measure limits certain gatherings between Thais, more likely to happen for sharing alcohol than when completely sober
 The conclusion, in all honesty, I do not know what to think, some would tell me then you do not care!

The rate of domestic violence deaths has doubled in the US since they started their isolation policies. The main reasons put forth for the alcohol ban were to try to minimize domestic violence and to stop people from congregating together to drink. The basic idea behind the policy was okay, but its implementation was not. They didn't take into account the medical factors that people with an alcohol problem might have.

 

Personally, I saw it coming and stocked up 3 days before the ban went into effect here in Samui. ????

The WHO recommend maintaining current restrictions and perhaps enhancing them. therefore it must be right. Not for me though.

I buy my rum by the case, so I was fortunate to have had enough to last me, in a few days its dry out time  

Then I must face my wife sober, not good

At my local mom and pop shops, where I can get a few bottles even on the holiest of Buddhist holidays, they are abiding by the ban. I assume somebody had a serious word with them about this ban.

Have been surviving thought the guest house bar fridge which was full but now down to only 20 small singah bottles that nobody (the other 3 guests). seems to want so will scoop up some up and in a few days it will be dry out

If its going to kick off it wont need alcahol to fuel it. Nanny State or a Stupid Military Rule. Take your pick. Banning anything never stopped the people obtaining it.

Yes it will cost jobs, I know of many locals that are now in serious financial trouble...

 

To me there is absolutely no link to the virus and having a couple of beers....Seems like some sort of religious idea, similar to cannot buy beer on certain days here....

No religion is going to come to the aid of a virus.

I am divided on the issue now that it is past the 15th. I saw this coming for the longer run and stocked up but it will be close to get to the 30th here in CM. But I also stay and drink home alone which is fine with me. On one side of me says my Thai neighbors around me will have more get togethers if no ban (100% - selfish uncaring brain dead thinkers), but on the other hand they have a ban on any gatherings even at peoples homes except for family members living there, so that should be enough, but it never is with Thai as I have seen with my neighbors. And don't get me wrong, I live in a nice new housing division. They simply just don't care.
