Hospitals are for operations, setting broken bones, etc... hospitals are not set up for infectious disease control on a large scale. This is why so many heath care workers are getting infected

Fascinating math. The US has a population of 330M people. Divide that by the 770k cases, and you get the number of 430 cases per 1M people. If you want to make an argument mathematically, you might want to try using correct math. Looking at the worldwide fatality rate, it is running at 6.8%, while the US rate is running at 5.3%.

you should also consider the corona curve.  where are they on the 1st wave cycle?

 

also consider the number of cases is tested/confirmed.  what percentage of their populations has each country tested?  and are the standards for inclusion in the "deaths" category the same in each country.  yes, math is fascinating!

 

those other countries are beyond the peak with falling numbers.  the us is not at this point, not when the virus still hasn't been contained.  not when the tweeter of the free world is encouraging his supporters to get out there and protest (in democratic strongholds).

Being "beyond the peak" is meaningless when you are locked up. Unless there is a vaccine, which is looking less and less likely, you are simply prolonging the inevitable. I fully agree with flattening the curve to better manage the healthcare system, but if the virus must run the course, then what is the best way to do that?

 

The real issue in America, is it's size and diversity. Laws that make sense in New York city make no sense in the middle of Montana. Michigan's governor has made some serious miscalculations, and should rethink her approach.

what should michigan's governor do?  ask the feds to quarantine the state (as in hubei province) and fully lock down the city with the highest infection rate (as with wuhan)?  maybe have the national guard block all movement in/out of detroit, and have lighter (or perhaps no) restrictions outside the city?  those are all valid options.  not sure how a very well-armed citizenry will react though.  twooting for thousands to gather and protest won't make stopping the spread of a virus any easier.

My point is quoting the numbers was the point out that the infection rate quoted in the post was off by an order of magnitude: 2,300 vs 430. Which means the US is only slightly higher than the worldwide average.

My home is in the UP of Michigan. There is very little need for draconian measures there. Much of the upper LP also does not need those measures. Allowing people to travel to their vacation homes during the "lockdown" makes sense, since they will be essentially self-quarantined by definition. The governor has implemented numerous measures that make absolutely no sense, like closing boat launches. That makes sense in an area where most boats are pleasure crafts full of people, but makes no sense where I live where most boats are one or two people going out to fish. Again, the US, and specifically Michigan, is not at all like China or Thailand. Measures need to be thought out better.

population of michigan is about 10 million.  according to the johns hopkins site, they've tested fewer than 110,000 - around 1% of the population.  (that site no longer appears to have foreign testing stats)

allow people to travel to their vacation homes?  that makes sense?  travel from where?  a high-contagion zone......and take the virus with them to the formerly safe areas?  didn't that happen with new yorkers heading to rhode island and florida?

 

absolutely, measures could be thought out better.  but do you expect a governor's order in the midst of a pandemic to take all factors into consideration?  you don't think a dozen beer buds are going to head out on a pontoon party boat for a drinking expedition, and 'splain it was okay 'cause they were also fishing?

That’s very much linear thinking that people will behave and self discipline. There are just so much of computation as to how and what people will do that can endanger the wider community.

Your numbers : 430cpm X 330 (million) = 141,900 That is not the number of cases is it?

The proper math is : 770,000 cases divided by 330 (million) = 2,333 cases per million

Did you see how it was already uncovered that this was a nationwide astroturfing op? All these "patriots" were mobilized by a number of different state-based websites with different names but somehow amazingly they all used the same text and ended up being registered to the same people. Right after this "storm the legislature" thing starts off, the President hissownself tweets about liberating various states with Democrat governors. 

Look, I'll give credit where it's due - good idea for a bit of a covert operation to try to push public opinion in your direction, and I by no means am of the opinion that only one side does this, they both do. However, once again, these guys are just rank amateurs and incompetents. If you're going to do a covert op, it shouldn't be able to be completely exposed by Reddit internet detectives within hours of its occurrence through basic searching of the web.
