Thai govt issues order extending emergency measures - alcohol ban unclear

The Thai government has passed an order confirming all emergency measures previously put in place to help combat the spread of COVID-19  will be extended until further notice.

The order, which tells provincial governors that all measures will remain in place, has been published in the Royal Gazette, Sanook reported.

At the time of publishing it wasn’t clear whether the order would mean an extension of the ban on alcohol sales.

While the order doesn’t specifically refer to alcohol sales, the ban on the sales of alcohol was one of a number of measures introduced in April.

Earlier this week, it was rumoured people in Thailand would be given a two day window in which to buy alcohol before a new ban was enforced.

The window would allow people to buy alcohol between May 1-2 but that would now appear to not be the case.

The previous ban on the sale of alcohol is due to expire today April 30.

Meanwhile, one supermarket in Bangkok put notices in store on Wednesday to announce that it would not be selling alcohol throughout May.

This is a developing story, this post may be updated.

PM dashes hopes of early easing of lockdown restrictions

000_1QD5F2.jpg

Any hopes people in Thailand may have had of seeing lockdown restrictions eased for some low-risk businesses and social activities by early May have been dashed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The Prime Minister issued an order, published in the Royal Gazette late Wednesday night, mandating all provincial governors, including Bangkok’s governor, to delay their plans to ease the measures until further notice.

The order, issued under Section 9 of the country’s State of Emergency Act, states that all lockdown measures remain enforceable until there is a new announcement from the Government.

The order means that the plan, by Bangkok’s governor, to allow low risk limited business and social activity resumption, will have to be shelved for now.

Inter-provincial travel will remain subject to control as staying at home remains the order of the day. That means many residents of the capital, who had plans to get out of the city for the long weekend, will probably have to stay at home instead.

I suppose you can say the same about the other easing measures that have been proposed. I have to say the BKK easing proposals seemed a little odd. You have 8 bullet points and they include pet hospitals and golf driving ranges? I think the plans need a little more work. Hopefully they will do some easing before the end of May with some well thought out proposals.

I still have some beers and a bottle of wine but no large gatherings at my place. I have to ration my stock to a single afternoon drink every few days.

Now what do you think of the infection/death rate figures being released?

If the rational is to stop people gathering in large groups can I respectfully suggest that that Prayut the great, also bans the sale of food, along with alchol, as we all know that if there is one thing likely to draw a large group of people tgether, especially the food crazy Thais,  it's the promise of good, plentiful food.

Please prayut ban food to stop co-vid 19 spreading any further. You must do this.....otherwise your ban on alcohol is pointless as alternatives exist which will still encourgage people to gather in groups.

If they think it will do more good than harm then they better think again. They will have a severe repercussion of anti attitude from the Thai. For foreigners we are not even considered worthy for opinion. This is not a Buddha lent thing where one choose to abstain. They are taking a way a freedom of a right.

For this complete turnaround to easing everything to extending restrictions has to mean some :hit-the-fan: and panic is setting in.

As if they care, their money is already in Switzerland.

The rich don’t give a donkeys about the plebs economically, socially or mentally, we are in Thailand it is what it is.

At least crystal water is cheap.

I thought the police are the ones to uphold the law and make sure people abide by the directives of not gathering in public and private places. This if they do it by ban and no open 2 day window is just a power play taking everyone's rights away. Military control is how it looks.

I think they are too afraid. My guess is they are working on the theory that if they don't actually tell anyone that the ban is extended then no one will notice....

Not much, but what I do think is this is only a power play and then a way to say to the world look at how we did it. Handbook under China 101. What next. They going to weld all of our doors shut?

It will only cause misery or even death to alcoholics who have a physical dependance on alcohol.  For the majority of people, there are plenty of other refreshing, healthy, drinks available, e.g. natural fruit juices!

I doubt that any of the governors are brave enough not to follow the herd.

So they mulled over the domestic violence issue, and blamed it on alcohol as the root cause, and then decided that as everyone is in lockdown, it's a good time to remove alcohol from everyone, even responsible drinkers.

Well thanks for nothing, did it ever occur to these bozos that one size doesn't fit all.

I've already noticed that some provinces extended the ban until 15 May, others 31 May.  Have not heard what Chiang Mai is going to do.

And I bet every single governor and politician supporting this has a suitably large stash of wine / beer / whiskey at home and cannot see for a moment what the issue is..and I would include Prayut in that as soliders whether serving, ex (or in prayut case both) are well know to like a pint or two...just saying.

As a previous poster mentioned this is about power and control, not co-vid. I hope people remember this when it comes to the next election. Rule by law or rule of law - make your choice voters.

Now is not the time to talk about drinking fruit juice in a middle of a crisis

Given the low number of cases reported in Thailand, either the Government is guilty of a monumental over-reaction that is going to cost them for years to come, or they are not being honest about the number of cases.
