Ban on toxic pesticides to go ahead, says minister

The ban on toxic agricultural pesticides paraquat and chlorpyrifos will be enforced as scheduled on June 1, Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said on Thursday (April 30).

 

The use of the third chemical, glyphosate, will be limited from May 23 in line with the measure issued by the National Hazardous Substances Committee.

 

Several people and agencies have recently called on the government to put the ban off until December 31, as it may have a negative impact on the trade of agricultural products.

 

However, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul disagreed saying that people’s health is more important.

NHSC votes to ban paraquat and chlorpyrifos in Thailand effective June 1st 2020

 

 

Thailand’s National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC) today (Thursday) voted not to postpone the June 1st deadline for the ban two toxic weed killers, paraquat and chlorpyrifos.

 

Twenty-four of the 28 members of the NHSC met today to discuss a proposal, from the Thai Chamber of Commerce, to delay the ban until the end of the year, claiming that it will affect the import of farm produce from the United States, where the two chemicals are still in controlled use.

 

The US government has been pressuring Thailand not to ban the chemicals, especially glyphosate, better known by the brand name “Roundup”, which is produced by the giant US agro-company Monsanto, which is now owned by German giant Byer.  Glyphosate is widely used in the US.

Good!   The US will squeal and no doubt make Thailand pay for their intransigence.. In the long run it is a good move.. There is a growing market for safe food.. and many unnecessary deaths from using those poisons will be avoided.

Agree. The USA is the worst offender on the planet, and their pharma and food industries the most immoral. now that Monsanto is owned by Bayer, hopefully EU health standards will be imposed.

There has been plenty of time for wholesalers and farmers to stock up.  So these chemicals will be used for a long time yet. Stockpiles can be replenished via illegal means, such as importing from nearby countries.  Who is going to stop them?  Certainly not the BIB who will let anything pass provided the right fee is paid.

 

Anyway allowing for the flip/flop nature of Thai politics this ban is not set in stone until it is enacted.

 

Only the end user will have to pay the inflated price so who loses?

What fresh farm produce comes from the States ? I can only think of apples?
 

Good for them - Paraquat was banned in Europe in 2007!

Since when? If the health of the people was so important, why haven’t they done anything so far about the huge number of traffic deaths every year? Or the fires in the North that keep causing more and more smog every winter, damaging the health of millions of people?
