China is a bad player. You won't get an argument from me against that. The problem here is that the tariffs don't hurt China. They hurt Americans. They are paid for by America. And then to save the American industries affected by these self-inflicted wounds we pump billions into them to prop them back up. They are ineffective. Always have been.

The tariffs had China reeling before the virus.

The Internet is full of stories, often contradictory, charged with anger, horror, indignation, and agendas, mostly unhelpful and some quite dangerous – like the cry that China must pay for this! Uh, like how? Send them an invoice: Please remit $11.7 trillion to the address above…?  Release the US Airborne over Beijing as if it were Belgium, 1944…? Drop the big one…? (They have big ones, too.)

Sometimes it sounds like random opinions from senior citizens on lockdown.

Here's some more random limp-dick opinions for ya......Grievances and recriminations sprout like the skunk cabbages of April: China did it to us so they could rule the world…. The Democrats are lovin’ it cuz it’ll finally get rid of the wicked Trump…. Bill Gates is lovin’ it because the vaccine he’s working on will make him rich…! Japan too, prior to Pearl Harbor.

Japan's military and economic aggressions in SEAsia led to oil embargos. The rest is living in infamy.

You think in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations; there are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There is no third world. There is no west. There is only one holistic system of systems; one vast interwoven, interacting, multivariate multinational dominion of dollars. Petrodollars, electrodollars, reichmarks, rubles, rin, pounds and shekels. It is the international system of currency that determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic, subatomic and galactic structure of things today. It is the international system of currency that determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things! Am I getting through to you? You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and Democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT &T and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today. What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state? Karl Marx? They pull out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, and minimax solutions and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments just like we do. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies. The world is a college of corporations inexorably determined by the immutable by-laws of business. The world is a business! It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live to see that perfect world in which there is no war or famine, oppression or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company for whom all men will work to serve a common profit and in which all men will own a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused.

I thought the list of corporations was a bit out of date!  You can watch the original 1976 speech here, complete with green bankers' lights.

However, it is wrong. The chaos of life including Western freedoms is fundamental to life itself going back billions of years as cells evolve to compete for resources. Its what makes life life.

The Chinese communist system can never understand this and it is their weakness.

The post you responded to is an example about how to do it wrong. It's tripe and anybody savvy knows this. Go say hi to Hillary.

They were growing about 6.5% GDP before the virus. Don’t look like they are reeling.

Certainly not reeling as you alleged. China GDP has been on the decline even before the trade war. China’s economy is facing challenges from deeper, structural, longer term and have been building for years. Issues like over investment, high savings, sluggish consumer spending and low industrial productivity. The GDP is within range from 6-6.5% deemed acceptable by the central government. Do some research.

Yes you are correct, needs Facebook, Amazon etc....   You do understand the definition of Communism?  China is no more communist then America.  I think you will find the "Chaos of Life" is about to get some order, because in the past "billions" of years Television Programming was absent.

There are good reasons for probing the virus which will be immensely helpful for medical science and future prevention of dangerous infectious pathogens. However China would not cooperate and allowing investigation under a cloud of threats by Trump. China will not bow to threats which make the government looks weak and the citizens will never support their government to cave in under threats. No country in the world would quivered and give up their sovereignty under unfounded accusation and threats. Trump is doing this for political reasons. The world better off cooperating as the pandemic is far from over. If the WHO with the consent of members want to investigate, China may willing to allow after the pandemic is over with a global sharing of vaccine. Trump’s Innuendo and threats for his domestic audience is not helpful.

But it's ok for China to threaten Australia with economic damage because it wants an inquiry? Australia didn't threaten China like your saying Trump is. Sounds like China is the bully to me, and as an Australian I'm proud that we are standing strong against the bullying, corrupt CCP. Be great if other countries had the balls to stand up as well.

It's totally ok for China to threaten Australia. What do you think your top customer would do to you if you continue to badmouth him?

The talk of an inquiry is mere lip service to the remaining, yet dwindling, patriots, monarchist's and WW2 vets.  Australia will do zero in "standing strong against the bullying, corrupt CCP"  The CCP didn't suddenly snap and over night become corrupt bullies.  They were corrupt bullies from the beginning with Chairman Mao.  So why has Australia allowed, not only allowed but assisted, China in snatching up as much land as it want's.  Handing out free and easy visa's and citizenship to the top ranked party officials and business leaders so they can gamble and party up at Crown,  all the while charging $15,000 and demanding hoops be jumped through from the children and grandchildren of WW2 veterans just so they can have the "privilege" of gaining citizenship for their foreign wives. Come on man as a fellow Aussie this sh*t should be repulsive to our culture.

Awesome response. We have the same problem in the US. We've invited the CCP to walk all over us for decades. US politicians of various stripes have been cashing in selling policy the whole time. And we keep electing the same clowns who have been driving our country into the ground.

I had the pleasure of chatting with a retired Aussie in Phnom Penh a few months ago. He had to flee Australia because his pension he worked decades for just wasn't enough. Are cigarettes really $26/pack there?

About $26 for a pack of 20's, yes.  To add insult to injury for the pensioners, they missed out on an increase to their pensions from the Corona stimulus package, yet the unemployed's welfare payments were doubled.

There is absolutely no positive outcome from instituting new tariffs. We will pay more for everything as a result.

When will Americans realize who pays the bill for all these extra tariffs? Here a hint: It's not the Chinese.

But the tariffs if they're sufficiently harsh will go some way to preventing the sale of Chinese products so damaging their economy.

If tariffs render Chinese goods too expensive and the rest of the world follows the example set by the US China might just get the message. A lot of their products are pure tat anyway especially the electrical items.

We all managed OK before China became an economic power house and will do so again once a vaccine is discovered.

China could have gotten that message before if the US would have chosen to engage other countries in their attempts. In stead they made different choices, tariffs on China and tariffs on other countries that could have helped them against China.

Lots of people and corporations buy from China because they have often good prices - and (I don't know how often) also good quality. I.e. Motherboards from ASUS, one of the top computer companies in this world, are now since many years produced in China and they are great quality. And that is only one example. I buy constantly electronic parts from China. It works just fine and cost often less than half of the US price (and that's before shipping).

There was a time when Made in China was a synonyme for cheap and bad. And that time, at least for many products, was long ago.

And their legacy for cheap shoddy merchandise lingers on.

In many peoples' opinions China is responsible for this cursed scourge which is going to kill many of us all over the world, ruin our economies and lives. Millions of us in the real world are now stuck indoors too scared to go out to seek any form of human companionship.

Those who continue to do business with them from now on are betraying those of us who will do their best to boycott anything made in China and treat 'em like the low life bullies and liberty takers their leaders actually are. If we let them get away with this who knows what sort of stroke they are going to try pulling next!

We've let them establish a monopoly on electronic goods and it's now our moral duty to destroy that monopoly.

We should set an example and stop buying electronic parts from China instead of crowing about how wonderful they are! You might sing and different song after seeing how people in Italy were lying and dying in hospital corridors alone in their own faeces and urine because their health services could no longer cope.

Loyalty, decency and morality should come before money especially if it turns out that this plague was man made in that Wuhan laboratory rather in a bowl of bat soup.

Are you real?

Let's look what else we should boycott?

- America because of their crazy MAGA leader who spreads misinformation. He is at least as much responsible for the million infected Americans than China.

- Saudi Arabia and many other countries in that area because of the human right record.

- Vietnam because they eat dogs over there.

- X because they to Y

- The list goes on an on.

But let's face reality and be realistic. How much would an iPhone cost if it would be produced inside the USA by US citizens? And how many people would pay that price?

I rest my case.
