Phuket's Tha Chat Chai checkpoint reopened on Friday (May 1) at 5am for the first time in weeks, allowing stranded people without work in the province to return to their hometowns.

About 5,000 people will be allowed to travel out of the province on day one.

Many people began to sign up before dawn on Friday to receive a four-coloured sticker and scan QR code which the officer will use as a confirmation to know which province they will travel to.

Phuket deputy governor Supot Rodrueang na Nongkhai said the decision was made since many businesses had closed in Phuket, and a lot of people who had lost their jobs wanted to return to their home provinces.

“I would like to thank all local administrative organisations in the province for their help, including providing them with survival bags, rice, fish, various food. Letting unemployed people back to their hometown might help reduce the burden of expenses such as rent, water bill, electricity bill and others,” the deputy governor said.

"On May 1, the trial will start. Approximately 5,000 people will be allowed to leave -- 2,500 in the morning, and 2,500 in the afternoon.

The first group of people travelling out of Phuket will be those who have arranged their own vehicles. However, people who are travelling back to their home towns must cooperate with staff and strictly follow the instructions," Supot added.

Welcome to the Phuket Independent Socialist State (<deleted>). If you want to get on the <deleted> you now have to pass through our own immigration checkpoint. ????

You forgot to blame the liberals.

It's already turning into a clusterf**k.   With a 10 km queue, the police told people it was now closed and people turned back.   Hundreds have returned their rental accommodation already, have all their possessions with them, and now nowhere to go.   Shambles.

Damn... is quite crepy. So actually... then the QR thing, and the queuing was for nothing... right?
So according to the info today, you just need to park your car in the queue, no matter if you registered anywhere? Right? i.e. they did not give slots like "you can go on this date on that time". Right?

How many of these folks have been adequately tested for Covid? What a great idea to let 40,000 people leave and disperse across the country when travelling is known to spread communicable disease. A complete shambles.

Too late to try to contain anyway, that train left in December/January. Name of the game is now uncontrolled gaining of herd immunity ( might already be in place but they ain't testing for antibodies, either ), since they aren't beefing up the test & track network.

Because it wasn't a case of just driving over the bridge.   Every individual had to be recorded and documented at the Sarasin Checkpoint.

I’m afraid in my life time and there’s not a hole lot left, we will see micro chips being a must have or do when going to different countries.

Chinese brought nothing than destruction, disaster and VIRUS. The real profit from their tourists has always gone back to themselves. Thais simply satisfied themselves with the tinny little piece of the cake. Now taste the CCP 19 Virus. The 20th version is coming with next wave ...
