trellis/net for small garden?

Featured Replies

I am growing just a bit of vegetables along the side of my house where it meets the neighbors, with a nice partition for things to grab onto. I am trying to grow some green beans and eggplant in the area. What can I do to makeshift a trellis/net for them? I don't see any of these to purchase, and even checked a couple of garden/lawn stores and they didn't seem to understand. I suppose all I really need are some bamboo sticks leaning against a wall and maybe some netting to give them the initial 'handholds'?  What do you find success with as far as trellis?

You could use bamboo. It's cheap and readily available. The main drawback is that the termintes plus wet in the rainy season means you'll get maybe half a year out of them and then have to replace them.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but I want to build a 30m long abor/trellis using rebar which comes in a grid form like this

If bamboo is soaked in water for 3-4 weeks it brakes down the starch in the wood and the termites will not eat the wood.

I have had  bamboo fencing post in the ground for a year before the base rots out, sometimes the post it's self is still ok .

I have used galvanized wire welded mesh panels sold by Global House. They are roughly 1 meter by 2 meters with various size grids around 5 cm square. They are cheap, strong, and hold up in the elements.

Good to know. I vaguely remember reading something similar.
