Covid-19: Thais returning to provinces for long weekend ignore government's restrictions

Manager reported that Thais were ignoring government pleas to stay home.

At the start of the long weekend yesterday they reported tailbacks to holiday places and beaches and crowds gathering at beaches ignoring social distancing rules.

Heading into Trat in the east of the country there was a 1.5 kilometer tailback and 45 minutes wait for a temperature check.

Krating Lai beach near Pattaya was packed with people collecting shellfish. The beach is supposed to be closed.

The Bang Saen was also crowded as was the Ang Sila Road.

Manager said that the people were not afraid of Covid-19 - they were afraid of not going out.

Government restrictions and social distancing are for you but not for me.  Don’t you know who I am?

If this continue, we soon back to scratch, and new lockdown, nationwide.

For those thirsty, better buy your alcohol tomorrow. Lifted alcohol ban will last how long?

People believe that the wuhan virus nightmare is over. Is it over yet????

Selfish arrogant ignorant dismissal of emergency decree, forbidding inter-provincial travel for all but necessary purposes. This kind of flaunting the rules, which were made to protect the nation, is exactly the kind of recklessness that could cause a resurgence of coronavirus. Millions are staying home and exercising social distancing, to do the right thing, but meanwhile some <deleted> think they can just do whatever they want. Bastards!

It could come back with a vengeance once people start travelling. Let's hope not.

Sure, and they have the money to pay the fines. :whistling:

Yet, i see locals ignoring the rules everyday, but we don't hear news of piling corpses at hospitals and crematoriums, so it could be fair to say that covid19 doesn't appear to be so dangerous in Thailand.

Where are the traffic police when you need them?

Hmm, I wonder how they’ll spin this in order to blame the foreigners.

The collective "up to me" mentality has kicked in.

Makes me glad that the mayor hasn't removed his "ring of steel" from around Pattaya yet.

Absolutely, and I bet the police aren't really doing much to try and enforce any restrictions.

I've been predicting that because there is no real enforcement, people will start ignoring the shutdown if the numbers stay low. And here we go. Also, I'm of the school of thought that everyone is going to contract the virus eventually anyway; people aren't going to stay shut in for  18 months waiting for a vaccine while the economy totally tanks.

now they need to block the roads coming out of those provinces for 2 weeks to keep them from bringing it back into Bangkok.

These unselfish courteous smart people will just have to stay there and throw trash on the beach and sidewalks there

Only have to look at how many run red lights,,,

Government and the General will simply flip-flop and announce it is OK to travel, but only on the 3 holidays they approved in May.

Had to laugh today reading Pattaya News. Had side by side articles one saying booze ban extended, and the other saying OK after Sunday May 3. With all the flip-flops, I am dizzy and need a drink.

So we all get bitter and twisted about Thai people ignoring the government but no one comments about the idiotic behaviour of Americans in Florida, Georgia , California etc. Or Hong Kongers doing the same, or Japanese, or Germans!

Why not just follow the Swedish model and ease up on the restrictions as the WHO suggests.

because the swedes worked together as a community and voluntarily followed the strict guidance issued by health authorities.

the swedish model will only work in a society that has some respect for "law 'n order" and consideration for people outside their immediate family.

because this is a thai forum and the behavior of protestors in michigan or drivers in new jersey has no bearing on the sale of alcohol in pattaya?

Only if they start importing dirty, smelly farang

Please forgive me for being a cynic, but no, I do not believe it's over yet. Not by a long way.

Go on… call me a Jonah

Alcohol in Pattaya is not the subject here.
