Video: Mad rush for booze - stores swamped as alcohol stocks fly off shelves in minutes!

The end of the alcohol ban in the Bangkok area caused a mad rush for beer and spirits at wholesalers and large shops in Bangkok on Sunday morning.

77kaoded reported a full car park at Makro on Sri Nakharin Road in Samut Prakan and tailbacks stretching several kilometers even before opening time.

As soon as doors were open at 10 am traders made a beeline for the alcohol section and started battling over cases.

Within five minutes the stockpile was exhausted and no matter how much Makro staff restocked the area it was not enough to satisfy demand. Beer proved especially popular.

In another report Sanook went to a store on Nakhon In Road in Nonthaburi where they said stocks vanished in "the blink of an eye".

The caption on their picture from a video said that it was as if the stock were being handed out for free!

Social distancing went out the window in the mad scramble for alcohol as 30 cases were snapped up in a minute.

First they came for the toilet papers, then they came for the booze..

LOL! Lot of folks not wanting to get left short if the ban comes back again it seems, as they were obviously not buying in normal mode. Have to confess that even though I still had three weeks supply in the house, I did pick up four extra boxes of beer just in case.

Animals don't jostle for alcohol, human drinkers and alcohol peddlers do!

It should have been anticipated and expected that any ban, once lifted would have consequences. Cause and effect. Which, IMO, made the banning of alcohol sales countrywide a potential hazard.  If they had banned pubs, bars, and restaurants from selling alcohol - and not allowing shop bought alcohol to be consumed in these and other public areas - it would have been a more appropriate strategy.

So now, we have to hope that the multi rush-hour crush countrywide to stock up will not cause a spike in the number of infected cases.  If it had been the USA or UK, the social distancing non-compliance outcome would have been disastrous, and Thailand can thank their lucky stars that pre-ban infected cases have been so low.

Watching the video when the pallet was near empty it looked like tag team wrestling with everyone in the ring!

In their infinite wisdom, the government and the governors have inadvertently created exactly the sort of situation they were trying to avoid.

If this was at 10am the only people allowed to purchase alcohol in Makro at that time are registered business owners, so by the time normal public can buy the shelves were empty ????????

Its a leo advertisement... to the right is 1/2 pallet of chang.. ????????????

I think you'll find these are Chinese/Thai Chinese store owners. Nothing unusual.

This registered business owners is a thing of the past as well as the "more than 10 liter" rule.

Never seen a buyer pass the checkout at Makro before 11 AM.

Usually I hurry to make it out before 11.

Recently I caused some raised eyebrows with the "vine winegar" at the checkout.

After some palavar with fellow staff the cashier was convinced it's non alcoholic :cheesy::cheesy:

Since long a Ritter chocolate "Rum Raisins Hazelnuts" has vanished from the shelves.

Can't remember ever having seen chocolate/confectionery with alcohol(?).

Exactly that by leaving open the chance for overzealous governors to ban again (as already done).

That happens with non elected governors playing the "promote me" game.

In the UK :

In week three of the lockdown champagne sales fell 41 per cent while beer sales jumped 70 per cent and cider sales increased by 89 per cent, the data from Nielsen shows.

Overall, total alcohol sales have been 20 per cent higher during lockdown, although they peaked at 55 per cent higher in the week before lockdown began, at the height of stockpiling.

Another sad reminder of the herd attitude in this country....

One health minister said at least 1 million!

Here in Ubon there was absolutely no rush at all yesterday on Saturday morning. I first went to my local wine and spirit shop and I was the only one there. Then I went up to Tesco to buy some large bottles of wine as my local shop doesn't sell these. I think I saw three people buying alcohol. Just like normal days.
