Thailand maintained the recent trend of single-digit daily increase in Covid-19 cases after eight more people tested positive, but there were no deaths over a 24-hour period, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said on Friday (May 8).

SCB sees 7.5% growth in bank deposits during virus crisis

Siam Commercial Bank said that bank deposits in the first quarter of this year enjoyed robust growth of 7.5 percent year-on-year, noting that Covid-19 and online platform awareness has prompted people to boost their savings, while the business sector has opted to deposit cash for enhanced liquidity in the wake of high volatility in the capital and bond markets.

28 drought-stricken provinces declared disaster zones

The Interior Ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has named 28 provinces as disaster areas due to drought and is mobilising agencies to provide immediate relief through measures such as digging wells, pumping water, building a tank and distributing water among residents.

Curfew hours to be eased for fishermen in Nong Khai

The Thai economy has reached its low point, with the gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to contract by 3% to 5%, instead of 1.5-2% as originally estimated, and exports will shrink between 5% and 10%. The inflation rate is expected hover between 0 and -1.5%, all according to Mr. Suphan Mongkolsuthee, president of the Federation of Thai Industries and chairman of the private sector joint committee.

Phone operators report 50% drop in top-up revenue
