Thailand must plan for another 12 to 18 months of serious impacts from Covid-19, a government advisory panel investigating the pandemic’s consequences has concluded.

After assessing Public Health Ministry data, the advisory committee on the social and economic impacts of the pandemic agreed the outbreak will have serious long-term consequences for health, the economy and society.

As such, a plan was needed to handle the impacts of Covid-19 up until December 2021, committee chief Prof Dr Jaras Suwanwayla told the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), the government’s thinktank.

Jaras said that aside from government remedial measures, help and cooperation from both the private and civil sectors was required to overcome the effects of the virus crisis.

His committee is currently gathering information to draw up the plan, which will be proposed to the government as a matter of urgency within three months. The advisory panel will hear from the Public Health Ministry on Monday (May 11).

The panel was set up on the Prime Minister’s orders on April 30.

Dr Jaras also admitted he was concerned about the scheduled reopening of malls and other outlets on May 17 as part of gradual easing of the lockdown. He said the reopening was unavoidable but had to proceed with extreme caution to avoid sparking a second-phase outbreak that could swamp the health system with a new wave of cases. He noted examples in many countries where the Covid-19 mortality rate is as high as 10-20 percent.

They better start planning for a possible civil war or WW 3 instead of giving useless "expert" opinions such as this. And don't come telling me this is not a possibility - who thought this could happen? All well to warn people not to overdue any relaxation but this beats everything again. In the "normal" world governments realize they need to bring back some sort of responsable life because otherwise too many casualties will fall related to stress & boredom, crime and unemployment. This pandemic has a vicious circle otherwise it wouldn't kill so many people worldwide. Unfortunately there are some who see their chance to strenghten their grip on the YES/NO society as we all know Thailand is.

Surely the big worry is that once tourism starts up again there's a major risk that the more deadly and aggressive form of the virus that has wrought havoc in Europe and the eastern US might get a foothold in Thailand. People here wouldn't be joking about 50 or 60 deaths then, maybe add three zeros to the number and see if that still makes you smile.

In fact, I'd hazard a guess that, without a vaccine, 18 months is very much the optimistic scenario. A century ago, it took 18 months for the Spanish flu to work its way through the global population to which it had free access. Now that so many countries are trying to isolate themselves, it might still be raging from country to country as they attempt to loosen restrictions, until such time as a vaccine is available, possibly years from now. And if further mutations occur during that period to make it even more dangerous, then all bets are off.

Every country around the world has been using the lockdown time to prepare the health system for a large scale overload.

Surely Thailand did the same?

The 18 months have not even started, when the green flag is shown ,and that will not be so for years to come, only then can people come out of the dark.

Years of this misery in store

So very true! They are so manipulative in their attitude towards realty! Only few days ago I read somewhere that the Thai economy was going to contract by 1.5 to 2%!(laughable lies or fake journalism) UK's BOE Governor said it was going to be the worst recession for 300 years!

Greece where I lived before expects 20% contraction.... Thailand will catch up with its own misleading information...

i fear the 2nd wave will kill a massive 67 people in thailand. you know like a regular day of car accident deaths.

In Italy they found out that 96% of the dead were around 80 years old and had other underlying conditions as well.

In other EU countries they found out that this year they had less total deads than in previous years....

This is the all or nothing game of bill gates.
