Thailand's entertainment industry can't just do something else instead because of Covid-19, says insider

 

 

A leading figure in Pattaya's entertainment and tourist industry has hit back at suggestions from a health official that pubs and clubs should do something else.

 

The suggestion came from a health ministry advisor Dr Khamnuan Ungchusak who suggested at a seminar that the entertainment industry in Thailand should reopen by doing something less risky.

 

Social distancing was impossle at bars and clubs and discos so they should just abandon the business and reassess their future.

 

Damrongkiat Phinitkarn, secretary to of Pattaya's entertainment and tourism sector, said it was clear that opening up Pattaya's bars and clubs was a long way off.

 

But suggesting that businesses and staff could just do something else less risky was nonsense and unrealistic. 

 

The sector needs help from the government.

Some employees were paid at first during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic but since then most have upped sticks and gone home.

 

Some have eked out a living selling drinks and things on a stick.

But businesses were in dire straights having to continue to pay high rents. 

 

He had written to the mayor for help concerning rents so that some bars might be able to ride out the next few months before they are allowed to reopen.

 

But a very uncertain present is now upon the industry and the future looks even less sure.

Typical of most government advisors, Minsters, Deputy Minsters, etc. They do not care about anything or anyone except themselves. These guys including the PM, Health Minister, his flunky Anutin, the drug dealer Deputy Minister and most others in the junta, are to busy to care. They may lose their turn at the public trough.

 

However, they are good at stupid ideas and statements.

Musicians skills are only gained after years of hard work and do not really apply to any other job......Its a damm sad situation....

 

But things have been getting worse for musicians for decades already........Napster was the start of musicians wows.....Record sales started falling each year.....Then digital downloads stole most of musicians recording income....They only get fractions of a cent for digital downloads....

David Crosby and others have been very vocal about the music theft that is going on in the music industry...

 

Now if musicians cant play live they have almost zero income.....

Endless bars here in Pattaya have been without (m)any customers even during the high season. I am always asking myself how they survive or if they are perhaps only used for money laundering.

 

I think this bar business is outdated and should be replaced by more appealing things. Could be the right time now to change this sex and booze image. Alone walking on the Beach Road in not Corona times is a sex hassle for "normal" tourists. But even yesterday when I had to walk to the post office - "I come with you", "boom boom" and other invitations for sex. An open air brothel open at daytime already and this even at Corona times.

It's been like that for over the 30 years since I first went there, which begs the question, why stay there if it's not to your liking ? Thailand is a big place.

Pattaya can change and look for tourists with other interests than sex and booze. Perhaps now is the best time for this.

What sort of ''interests'' than sex and booze the city can offer?

The beach is dirty, the city is ugly, the shopping is not cheap

there is no historical sites or attractions to visit, only fakes ones

(Like the floating market)

This fact that younger generations lack an appreciation for live music is very disturbing to me.  I know 2 guys here from USA, one mid-40's and another early 30's who both "love" and "listen" to EDM, they had to tell me it stands for Electronic Dance Music.  Elwood Blues said it best:  ".... leaving the next generation with nothing but recycled, digitally-sampled techno-grooves, quasi-synth rhythms, pseudo-songs of violence-laden gangsta-rap, acid pop, and simpering, saccharine, soulless slush."

Without the entertainment industry Pattaya will slowly wither and die. How many people are going to travel 10,000 kms to sit on a filthy beach, no nightlife and the only attractions being fake markets selling the same old tat.

Ah markets, the answer to everything and no limit to the number needed! Isn't the old Xcite disco land being developed into one!

Problem is what goes on behind the curtain. Social distancing? Who will buy a lady drink from 2 meters away? And they cater to the highest risk groups and just imagine the damage just one super spreader (pun intended) will do ! 

I love the go gos but sadly they are history IMO

If you don;t like it then move. This is really the only community where you get this, which is what built the city. Plenty of other options out there

I for one is happy someone spoke up to this suggestion easy for someone who was handed the job by connections who lives a privilege life who most likely never suffer one bit make such a stupid statement. If that is true he should look for a new line of work since he hasn't contributed to any real suggestion in solving the problem.

The guy couldn't care less about Pattaya or its penny pinching ex pats. Many Thai's loathe the place and find it an embarrassment.

Pattaya may be hung out to dry in the new normal. Rolls Royce have just announced 9000 job losses. Nearly a quarter of the work force.

I will be visiting Pattaya asap but i wouldn't want to a long term resident.

You have to see the bigger picture and not only the bar ladies in front of you. The ladies can work online and you save on Lady drinks and bar fines. On top of it you can often see ratings of other customers there. Bars are a thing of the past. Mostly old people go there who can't use the internet. And at some bars the ladies are dressed as nurses already that these old guys feel safer. And booze? There are so many other places for it. Even in front of a convenience store you often can sit and meet friends. Why wait for a happy hour where you still pay far too much and feel unhappy because of this?

What does the Thai consulate in Saigon do everyday?  Saigon's entertainment venues are open.  Besides doling out visas, do they ever tell cha cha what is happening outside of Thailand ?
