Egg board releases measures to deal with oversupply

The egg policy development board is launching measures to deal with the glut in eggs, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sreeon said on Monday (May 25).

The authorities had previously suspended the export of eggs from March 26 to April 30 to solve the problem of shortages as people began hoarding eggs over fears related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

As of May 20, the daily production level for eggs stood at 41 million, while daily consumption is expected to drop to 38 million per day due to the economic slowdown, temporary closure of venues, drop in tourists and slow global recovery.

According to the Department of Internal Trade on May 22, eggs were being sold at Bt2.40 per piece, far below the Bt2.68 it takes to produce an egg due to an oversupply of 3 million eggs daily.

Chalermchai said the board has issued guidelines to resolve the egg price issue by promoting exports, retiring 3 million laying chickens, selling eggs via Blue Flag stores and delaying the incubation of laying chickens by up to 10 weeks.

“The Department of Internal Trade will promote egg exports, while the Department of Livestock Development will responsible for retiring and postponing the incubation of laying chickens,” he said.

He also said that up to 30,000 eggs worth Bt75,000 had been delivered to the Bamrasnaradura Institute, Thai Red Cross Society, Rajavithi, Chulalongkorn, Ramathibodi and Phramongkutklao hospitals.

“We have sent 31,900 eggs worth Bt85,880 to 1,065 households in eight communities, and also handed Bt10,000 to the association of hen-egg farmers in the South,” he added.

retiring 3 million laying chickens,

No pensions for these fowl creatures. Unable to feather their nests like politicians.

Maybe a better headline would be "3 Million chickens laid off."

How about giving away free eggs to the hungry?

just promote thai people to eat 4 eggs per day, cheap & healthy

LDL conspiracy has been debunked, but same as corona, the medical world lacks 20 years behind on everything

by the time there is a vaccine, there will be NO NEED for it...

as this is a weak immune problem (old, chronic sick, ...)

Of course. Who do you think deals with the exportation? Oops I mean benefits from exportation.

Anything worth having here and there are middlemen.

3 million chickens laid to roost ? badda bing.

This calls for egg stream measures!

Time and again we see bumbling Thai government sticking it's paw into what ought to be a free market

First too few eggs (they feared anyway) so ban exports

Then too many eggs... and now promoting exports

Put me in charge. Let me take a crack at it. Get rid of these shell corporations... they already have egg on their faces!

Thailand - explained. They have an "Egg Policy Development Board"; wonder how many unsackable officers hang around on that payroll and what they should do five working days a week.

Then Mr Chalermchai hits the pan by announcing guidelines to "retire 3 million laying chickens"; those standing around will get retired in the next round. On that subject, how do you retire chicken; any handout by the Social Security Insurance of Hens and Ladycocks?

The Dept. of Internal trade informs, that production costs are B 2.68 (wonder how they got that figure but maybe the Egg Policy Development Board lent a helping hand on that) and is sold at B2.40. At the same time 30'000 eggs worth B75'000 (or B2.50/egg) were delivered.

If you ask me, get all those sticky fingers of all those "experts" in all those boards and departments out of the cookie jar and let the market saturate the demand - like in all other countries without "Egg Policy Development Boards".

Given a more attractive price, more eggs would be consumed. 20 years ago 30 eggs were sold at B28/rack, so why did a 100% domestically produced product from A to Z overinflated more than 300%? Well, the "Egg Policy Development Board" might have an answer also on that ????

I've seen eggs for sale in UK Aldi, online ad:

https://www.aldi.co.uk/c/groceries/fresh-food/milk-butter-and-eggsq=3apopularpage=0

Ranging from 7.5p to 21.5p each.

At today's conversion of £1 = 39 baht, 2.68 baht to produce an egg in Thailand is 6.8p. That's farmer's price. If a store in the UK can sell eggs at 7.5p per egg, which includes marketing, packaging and other costs, how come in Thailand it costs 2.68 baht to produce an egg?

Set up a "shell" company!

You could not make this up. Beyond believe....A chicken union on the horizon?

Haven't noticed that at Big C Extra, where 10 grade 0 eggs have been increased from 59 to 65 Baht.

I do notice price reduction on many goods in Makro and Tesco, but in Big C Extra I only see price increase , especially on most imported goods which have gone up by 10 - 15% in the past month.

During this period egg poachers could end up in hot water.

I would say,,,,, The Rooster,,,,

After the egg oversupply a retired chicken oversupply will follow in the shops. Great times for bird lovers. ????????

On the dot, what about the retiring of 3 million laying chickens

Take them to the tiger zoos. Probably starving skin and bones about to be ground up and sent to China.

Perfect example of the stupidity of government.  To think a small group of people would be able to guess the nber of eggs needed rather than allowing the free market to run its course.

Now there million chickens will be killed.  What a waste

Yes there is an egg board, most developed countries has one or something equivalent.

When you are dealing with 40 million eggs a day, it make good sense to some control

board to watch for over supply and undersupply.

And know if the farmers are receiving a good price for their produce.

As a way to deal with excess or surplus, better than having farmers have to throw away

 millions of eggs a day.

Even though we are not poor, the local village head man had delivered to us and

all families 2 kilos of rice and 20 eggs just this past weekend.

Everything that happens in Thailand is not stupid or wasteful.

Of course foreigners who hang out here often can't see beyond their hate

for the country they choose live in.

That boggles my mind, why live somewhere that you hate the people and

everything they do.

On the other hand there are some who just hate as second nature and

even have a grudge against their own D*ck.

Stupid comment. The article explained very clearly why.

I doubt the excess chickens will be just wasted, there are good markets for poultry.

Have you ever thought the poultry farmers might like an agency that looks out

for their market and informs when supply or demand is more or less than

an individual farmer might know, so will be able to adjust to market

conditions and have large losses.

Let's try and get past these fowl comments above. Plenty of people going without food. Hey junta buy some eggs and give to the people. Nooooooo! Sorry thinking about this this the junta should buy all the eggs and sell them back to the people at an inflated price. Got to pay for those eggspensive Chinese subs.

Free market running it's course. Sorry you can't afford this operation. This is a free market you have to die. Bit off topic I know.

In the US they were saying egg demand went as more people home cooked for breakfast, were panic buying and prices went up.

Problem was with processing and shutdowns. Millions of birds "depopulated" not retired as they say in Thailand.
