Naew Na reported that the first of three automated trains-cum-trams will arrive in Thailand on June 10th.

Three have been ordered from China but they have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The vehicles will run on the Gold Line between Krung Thonburi and the Klong San district office.

Trials will take place before the route is fully opened to the public at the end of October 2020.

Manit Techopichoke of KT Co.Ltd said that the Bombadier Innova APM 300 vehicles would run on a central rail with wheels either side.

They don't have drivers and are capable of top speeds of 80 kmph.

He said that passengers could expect a smooth ride.

how is this different than the highways other than they are slower?

sounds like they will be much safer than any other mode of transport in Thailand

AFAIK the traffic lights on railway lines are mostly set to green, and they don't have traffic congestion. Maybe you got the blue pills mixed up today.

Until it meets an abrupt stop, then it will be anything but smooth !

"Three have been ordered from China but they have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic."

I guess Bombardier has willingly surrendered their technology to China.  Not unlike many multinationals.

It´s a sure winner. Every engine driven product that can run without a driver in this country, just must be 1 000 % safer.

I have been on a driver-less train and found it most disconcerting to look into the drivers cab and find it empty as we hurtled along into oblivion. Then again, controlled by computer is probably far safer than having Somchai as train driver.... except that the computer is also probably controlled by another Somchai.

As for cum trains..... only Thailand would have a train service with a happy ending!

I guess Bombardier has willingly surrendered their technology to China.  Not unlike many multinationals.

Its a joint venture with a Chinese company:

http://china.bombardier.com/about_bombardier_in_country.html

"CRRC Puzhen Bombardier Transportation Systems Limited (PBTS) was established in 2014 by Bombardier and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co. Ltd. The joint venture is focus on the design, manufacture and sale of APM and Monorail vehicles, sale of wayside systems, their integration as driverless system, as well as offering the consultation and aftersales services."

And It doesn't run on a central rail.

It runs on wheels (one in each corner of each unit) which support its weight and power it forward/back.

The rail is a guide rail.
