I stopped smoking 3 years ago thanks to hypnotherapy in KL, Malaysia. I quit from one hour to the other and it was really very easy, although I smoked 2 packets a day for almost 25 years !

This method is not available in KL anymore and I do not have the contacts anymore. does anyone know if hypnotherapy is available in BKK and where ?

I'd like to help out some friends with a method that worked wonderfully for me...

thanks

mmm... would be interested to see what JK has to say about this.

I tried the quick hypnotherapy method many years ago. It involves implanting a negative suggestion in the mind, as well as positive suggestions to make you feel better. This was actually part of a training course rather than my going especially for this treatment.

However, I found the suggestions irritated me and managed to break the program. It also had the effect of my no longer trusting the methods being taught. Bit of a shame as the area is fascinating but I think to resolve any real issues rather than the symptoms require many more in-depth hypnosis sessions. However, most hypnotherapists' earnings come from the quick one-session fixes for smoking, weight gain etc that they perpetuate the myth that everything can be solved in one session.

just my experience

To answer rychrde; The use of positives and negatives is a big part of smoking cessation. Selecting the right suggestions in a one session program is very difficult, and that is one of the reasons I don’t do one session programs. When a client comes back for their second session it is like an open book to know what way to go and what positive and negative suggestions will be best for them. Typically I use both age regression and age progression.

With age regression I allow them to remember what it was like before they smoked that being the positive. Then using age progression I take them into the future and allow them to experience what their life would be like if they continue smoking, thus the negative. Their imagination already has some idea of what that part of their life would be like, however nicotine makes them ignore that future. Seeing them gasping for air for a few minutes in my office as they experience what lung cancer or advanced emphysema is like becomes a very powerful negative suggestion. It also helps get rid of the “It will never happen to me” thinking that is so common with smokers. It makes them think twice if not more about lighting up another smoke. Then using a post hypnotic suggestion that negative experience reoccurs if they think about lighting up. That tends to very quicky help them decide that It’s a bad idea to light up.

Another use of negatives is directly related to sexual activity. The men that truly need Viagra or some other similar medication, are smokers. I have seen survey results that doctors did, and 87% of the men that needed viagra were smokers. The remaining 13% were non smokers but had other issues. So if necessary I would send someone home impotent powered with the suggestion smoke or sex but not both. Once in their mind they quit and have put out that last smoke their erection returns. That suggestion would only be truly powerful for men who’s lives evolve around sex. If they think about lighting up after, the difficulty in getting an erection returns. For men who are less active other negatives are found.

All the negatives I use are related to smoking, I just allow people to experience them temporally to help refresh their memory and give them a taste of the future. If they continue to smoke they know next time it will be for real and wont go away with a hypnotic suggestion.

The human mind like any living thing will try to heal itself. One of the methods it commonly uses is blocking bad memories and thoughts. A good example is 9-11. The people that were not directly effected have all but forgotten the emotions they had when the towers came down. Because of that people are more resistant to support and fund the war on terrorism as they see the human cost of that war mounting up. If the towers came down just last week, there would more than likely be a line of volunteers waiting to go and fight. Simply put, unless it is in our face we put it out of our mind.

So to summerize, both positive and negatives are used, and it requires identifying what ones to use to be the most effective.

I would be very wary about going to a hypnotherapist who uses age regression to help smokers quit. Taking people back to their past is fraught with danger. An acquaintence was taken back and rediscovered his first puff on a cigarette was after his grandfather raped him in bed. Result...............ruined life, shattered present and all thoughts of wanting to give up smoking gone to be confronted with a new nightmare. And yes his life was fine before the hypnotherapy. My advice........don't go to a hypnotherapist who uses the sledgehammer of age regression to crack the nut of smoking.

I used relaxation and self-hypnosis to stop smoking. I really enjoyed it and even now, years later, I just have to think the word 'Relax' and I completely relax. Very useful in stressful situations!

You certainly sound like an expert here. Can you tell me if it was controlled regression looking for target memories related only to smoking with this person you know? Example if I asked you what you had for breakfast yesterday that is a form of controlled regression. Your thoughts would only be on the food you ate for breakfast yesterday. You would not even think about what secondary things you were doing like perhaps reading the morning paper while eating.

Perhaps you should not try to scare people with your clearly unprofessional comment made to sound professional. Also you do not even know what target memories are being looking for, clearly not the ones you suggest. As I said regression looking for positive memories. I also wager you did not know that during hypnosis repressed memories that may be uncovered can just as quickly be covered again by simply restoring the selective amnesia. Anything done with hypnosis can just as easily be undone, it is not like surgery that once you cut something off it’s not coming back.

For the record ratchabuild, what are your professional credentials in hypnosis / hypnotherapy?

After that feel free to go and read the page on my website that cover regression to help educate yourself.

Um... No such thing as 100% controlled regression. What country did you become certified in? In the UK it is incredibly easy to become a C.H.- I am living proof (in my case they called it NLP so I guess you are not UK). Buyer beware. I am not trying to cast doubts as to your abilities- I am sure you are entirely professional, but it would not do to let the point go unchallenged.

It is not always easy to "rehide" forgotten memories, for example the memory of something incredibly traumatic, might awake the subject instantly as with a too direct suggestion e.g. "Why not pick up that gun and shoot yourself".

It has more risks than many alternative techniques for smoking and to make it seem like it is not an open debate among professionals is a mistake.

My point here is rachabuild is completely unqualified to make such a statement. If you are truly a hypnotherapist then you should already know the answer. As for controlled regression, I suggest you read some of the more recent papers or even some of the papers I have published. I also did not say the regression was 100% controlled. What I did say is I limit it to positive memories. That level of control is highly achievable as you should know. Your comment of pick up a gun and shoot yourself completely suggests you know not what you are taking about as our core survival instincts are rooted far deeper than hypnosis can go. Your comment also violates ethical guidelines by claiming to be a professional and implying the false information that hypnosis can cause you to kill yourself. Regression is a discovery tool and properly you dont give direct suggestions. Instead you are asking questions to discover information related to the therapy. Giving direct suggestions in a state of regression is not regression, it is something else.

In the case rachabuild is talking about, the more I think about it the more I tend to think it is not true. There is an occasion gold digger looking to make some money this way by trying to bring legal action. Their case quickly falls apart when it comes out what can be done can be undone. If it is not undone it is because they don't want it undone. That is well documented with Erickson and Elman independently well over 25 years ago to name a few. There has never been a successful case of this nature to my understanding. As I said it's not like surgery. You should also know it does not take a hypnosis to bring back traumatic memories. Anything can do this from a sound to a smell, to a touch or any of the senses. If someone thinks they will have a bad memory, then in fact they have already recalled the memory.

Where you are saying it is not always easy to re-hide a memory, yes this is true but not impossible.

The use of regression with smoking cessation is tied to breaking the mental addiction by allowing them to recall positive memories of their choice one month before they started smoking. If getting raped is not a positive memory they will not be recalled simply because that is what they want. I also find out why a person started smoking in the interview process even before they are accepted or rejected from my program. If it was as a result of a negative experience, then they are dealt with in the most appropriate way for them. I also have on my intake sheet a place for people to indicate any emotional sensitivity to a topic. Of the hundreds of people I have worked with all said they had positive and wonderful memories that came to mind. All have been successful in becoming an ex-smoker. I also don’t have the need to take them down to true regression level as pseudo regression (memories seen in past tense) is fine for smoking cessation. True regression (memories seen in present tense) is never easily done on the first session plus the long induction makes it also unpractical.

The most recent was in March, however the paper is not directly related to smoking however certainly related to one of the health risks associated with smoking. Regression was used to recover memories sensations of normal walking prior to the stroke to provide a target.

smoking is one of the toughest habits to break. Nontheless, there are many ways to stop smoking. The best way is to decide whether you really want to do it. Once you have a strong enough desire to stop smoking, it will become easier to actually stop smoking. (That's why so many people can stop smoking successfully by going "cold turkey".)

Once you find your desire or "why" do you want to stop smoking, you should get some guided help. This can be in a form of books, programs, or other professional help.

This will help guide you to a process of stop smoking using a proven systematic method.

It is not a magic bullet. YOU MUST PUT in your effort, in order to stop smoking successfully.

You can stop smoking and other bad habits by using a proven system created by Lee Milteer. You can find it at www.Stop-Bad-Habits.com

Heh, same here. I had hypnosis to stop smoking here in Bangkok. Was very nervous before I arrived but he was very professional and knew were i was at. About hour n half later i was a non smoker. That was 6 months ago. I havent touched one since. I sometimes think of smoking but somehow I just move on to the next thought and forget about it. Hope it works for you mate.

i remember the hypnotherapist i went to asked me just how much i wanted to stop.. i said 7 out of 10 and he sent me packing. he said you need at least 8 out of ten otherwise it wont work because my motivation wasnt hight enough. In other words I didnt really, in truth, want to stop smoking. I thought it was really honest of him. A few months later I found myself worrying about what each cigarette could be doing to me... cancer, shorter life, breathing difficulties... just those thoughts alone pushed me to my 10 out of ten, so I went back and havent smoked since. Also the fact that he was honest enough to send me packing the first time meant that he was a decent guy. that helped me relax even more knowing he wasnt a crook. all good stuff..
