Norwegian prosecutor takes out first Norwegian indictment for child sex trafficking abroad

A man has been indicted by Norwegian authorities for trafficking a child in another country for the first time

A 47-year-old Oslo man, whose name was withheld, was indicted for finding a young boy in Thailand and then allowing pedophiles to abuse him, said Paal K. Loenseth, a national prosecutor, by telephone Wednesday. He said it was the first such case in Norway.

The suspect was also indicted for sexually abusing six other Thai children himself in 2004 and 2005, as well as photographing the abuse and publishing it on the Internet.

"We indicted the man for trafficking because in one case in Thailand he received a minor boy and turned him over to two of his acquaintances in a network. Those two abused the boy in the suspect's apartment in Thailand," said Loenseth.

Loenseth said police found about 35,000 photographs and 1,300 videos of child pornography, including about 300 believed produced by the man himself, in his home. He was arrested in April, just before his scheduled to return to Thailand.

The man, an airline employee, had an apartment in Thailand, and the state radio network NRK said he advertised sexual services by 10- to 12-year-old boys on the Internet.

The case is set to go to trial on May 8 and the man could face 21 years in prison if convicted.

Loenseth said the two men allowed to abuse the boy in the suspect's apartment were probably French and Australian, and that Norwegian case files had been sent to those countries for investigation.

Norwegian charged with child trafficking

A 47-year-old Oslo man has been charged with trafficking and sexual abuse of children.

The man has looked for young Thai boys before traveling to Thailand. He promoted himself via the Internet," police lawyer Sverre Bromander told Aftenposten.

The man had an apartment at his disposal which he used to contact boys as young as 10-12, whom he then assaulted," NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.

"We are charging the man with trafficking because in one case in Thailand he took an underage boy and delivered him to tow of his acquaintances in a network. These two assaulted the boy in the accused's apartment in Thailand," district attorney Pål Lønseth told NRK.

Canadian police began solving the case, confiscating photographs of assaults in 2005 and 2006, and believing they had found a Norwegian in several of the pictures.

"We took over the investigation of the man after the Canadian police found the photos. There were several things on the Internet that led us to him," Bromander said. Police had a good overview of the man's movements and he was arrested outside his home in Oslo on April 6.

"The man was planning a trip to Thailand a few days after his arrest. We have every reason to believe that he was planning to carry out new sexual attacks on Thai boys," Bromander said. :o *bravo for preventing additional victims*

At the 47-year-old's home police confiscated 35,000 photos of assaults and 1,300 films - 300 of the photos and films were self-produced. The charges are based on this evidence and the testimony of the accused.

Bromander said there were several aspects of this case that were novel for Norway, including child sex tourism and human trafficking abroad.

Child trafficking has a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison, the same as Norway's top sentence for murder. :D It is also possible that this case could qualify for a sentence of preventive custody, which acts in practice as a life sentence.

According to newspaper VG's web site, the man has said that he wanted to achieve status and friendship with other pedophiles in an international network, by distributing images of the assaults. :D

Good job done by The Police forces of Canada and Norway.

I'm sure The Thai Police could set up sting operations to catch many more people like him, those who come to Thailand for the purposes of exploiting the young and the poor.
