Why Netflix's Black Lives Matter category is a step in the right direction

Last week, Netflix introduced a new Black Lives Matter collection in its categories section, featuring over 50 TV shows films, and documentaries that represent some aspect of the Black experience.

 

The available options range from inspirational films like Becoming, to educational documentaries such as The Kalief Browder Story and comedies like #BlackAF.

 

The company explained its new move on Twitter, stating that "With an understanding that our commitment to true, systemic change will take time – we're starting by highlighting powerful and complex narratives about the Black experience."

 

This new collection appeared on the home screen of subscribers when they logged on, offering them the chance to view all of the selected features in the category before opting to go back to their usual home.

To those of us who have always worked on the idea that everyone deserves a fair go black lives matter is rather jarring. ......    I have just deleted most of my post as I realised that whatever I say or think it doesn’t matter, leave them to destroy themselves.... your life matters, so does mine.

Funny how many people don't get this. Black people in the US and some other countries of course are subject to structural racism specifically just for being black. BLM is about raising consciousness about this long standing problem and working to make it better. Saying All lives matter misses that basic point.

I am having a protest myself its called F.T.M fat lives matter ,it is starting tomorrow at 10am at KFC ,we will then march to Burger king and later the march is to end at Greggs , all of you come and join the cause .

No, they don't get it at all.

 

What happened after the Civil War (in the Southern secessionist states) is responsible for the situation today.

 

The United States failed to finish the job.

 

It was as if Germany had surrendered in WW2 and its leadership was not subject to the Nuremburg Trials and subsequent punishment, and allowed to go home.

 

As if there had been no policy of De-Nazification.

 

As if its leadership had statues raised to them, while their supporters were allowed to carry on with jew-baiting and persecution, as long as there was none of that concentration/extermination camp stuff.

 

As if the victorious allies just stood back and watched.

 

As if the children of post-war Gemany had not been educated about the evils of the Nazi regime.

 

"States Rights"?

 

The South fought the war for the "right" to keep slaves.

 

A disturbing number of people seem to think that a noble thing, an heroic thing, a good thing.

 

Those people will not be "reasoned" with.

 

They do not deserve to be reasoned with.

the history of the USA is mired in racial controversy,its a sad fact but it really is a problem that they must sort out both black and white.police there are armed and aggressive but against all groups from what ive seen,black men commit crime far out of proportion to their nos unfortunately so thats an issue they must face up to as well.of course most are law abiding.so its a complex issue.the availability of guns is another US problem,we in UK and europe dont have these problems and its not for us to become involved especially in the way its transpired in the last few weeks,radical groups have hi jacked an american issue,its bizarre dangerous and has deeply offended and insulted many people,the churchill statue incident but one,this type of behaviour causes so much damage to relations between different groups that it could create a serious divide not heal it.we see freedom of speech threatened and disturbing scenes in reading and the reaction to it from govt and other groups.i suggest we step back from the abyss as radical groups are using this as an opportunity to throw us into it.respect all lives should be the mantra.the ones in reading too they were the victims of a racist.

In the UK, by poking a stick at the white population by violent protests including defacing the Cenotaph to our war dead, the statue of Winston Churchill and other heroes and the attempt to burn the union flag, they aren't making themselves many friends. Of course, they'll always have the support of the majority of immigrants, the hard left and other minority groups. Unfortunately, these groups always make the loudest noise, other folk just want to get on with their lives. The final straw was our football teams taking the knee this week, I for one won't be the same avid supporter that I once was. Maybe this is what the anarchistic BLM want, but as an ex-soldier, I have no time for people who support an organisation that disrespects my dead comrades.

The USA is not Germmany, Nazi or otherwise. To compare past slavery in the USA, to the Nazi atrocities and Nuremberg trials, post-war, etc., is a questionable comparison.

 

Why not include and cote every other country that exterminated, enslaved, raped, burned pillaged and looted? I look at the USA and its failings as an independent country, not compared to any other in it long road to cotrecting injustice.

 

Ultimately, my vote plays a large part in this ongoing USA process, not my ramblings on TVF.

Rubbish, niether Jefferson Davis OR Linclon thought the war was about the right of the southern states to keep slaves. How could they have fought a war to keep slavery when the Union was not threatening to end it, kind of impossible. Lincoln said at his swearing in he would not interfere with the southern states and that he felt he did not have the right to end slavery. The war was about liberty from, as they saw it, a tyranical Union. Lincoln admitted if he could have saved the Union without freeing any slaves he would have and in fact never did legally free any in his life time, and did not issue the proclimation until 21 months into the war. It was not an issue at all at the start, until the war was not going well. Linclon only came up with his proclimation to free slaves as a tactic to win the war and avert Brits and France from recognising the CSA. The confederacy did have a legal right at the time to leave the Union. Ironic that people still portray the south as racist when still today over 25% of the presidents of the USA were slave owners and Lincoln the great emancipator thought blacks were inferior and wanted to ship them back to Africa, maybe time to topple his ridiculous monument.

Shock horror, the US is 60% white and historically 70/80 %

The UK is 80% white therefore the same happens there too

It's something that will happen organically, trying to force the issue is pushing things back 50 years

That's great, it'll stop me having to think about what series/movies are too 'ethnic' for me and now I can easily avoid watching.
