Two Seattle protesters hit by car on highway, one critically injured

(Reuters) - Two protesters were injured, one critically, in Seattle early on Saturday, when the women were hit by a speeding car that drove past other stopped vehicles into a crowd demonstrating on an interstate highway, police said.

 

The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Seattle man, was arrested at the scene of the incident, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. PDT (0830 GMT), and faces multiple felony charges, Washington State Patrol Trooper Chase Van Cleave said by phone.

 

"He was placed in custody when troopers arrived on scene," Van Cleave said by phone. "The investigation is still ongoing. At this time we're not suspecting drugs or alcohol as a factor in the crash."

 

Police did not identify the suspect or the victims, both women, one of whom is in her 30s and hospitalized in serious condition. The other woman, who is in her 20s, sustained life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition, Van Cleave said.

 

Investigators do not know whether the driver intended to hit the demonstrators, he said. Seattle has been the scene of numerous demonstrations, some of them on interstate highways, since the May 25 killing of George Floyd on a Minneapolis street while he was in police custody, which was captured on video.

 

A video of the Seattle incident shared on social media shows a lone white car speeding up Interstate-5, swerving to avoid a van that was parked to block the roadway and heading toward a small group of panicked protesters who tried to scurry away.

 

The car can be seen striking two individuals near the side of the roadway, both of whom were flipped over the car's roof before landing on the pavement.

The driver was black, I hear, that's going to disrupt a few potential narratives; anyway, blocking an interstate in the middle of the night, no reflective gear or what have you - what could go wrong?

Need to borrow a tank from the local National Guard like that guy in San Diego did years ago.

That way you can drive over anything...

They shouldn't be on the freeway exercising, regardless of the person's skin pigment

The video shows the idiot protesters setting up a roadblock in the I-5 INTERSTATE HIGHWAY at night using a white van and red car, on the backside of a curve in the road (blindspot) then congregating near them. 

 

What do they expect? 

 

Also the driver of the white car is black. 

See what happens when you decide to try and set up another autonomous zone on a Highway where legally the speed is 70 mph.  Lets see, flying dart into stationary object comes to mind, or was that what the bug saw last when it hit the windshield....

really tragic sad accident .... i hope the driver makes a full recovery

Yep, highways are for motor vehicles, walk on them at night at your peril.

 

Watched the video,

So the driver saw an 'abandoned' van in the middle of the road at night and swerved to miss it.

Didn't seem to be any warnings, or flashing lights, or cones out ...... could happen to any driver.

braked and skidded when he saw the people after he overtook stopped vehicles. Perhaps your driving style, but I suggest any one seeing stopped vehicles ahead on a motorway would slow down and stop, not continue driving at high speed.

They should not have been on the highway in the first place.  correct  ?

If they abided by the law it would not have happen. It's their own stupid fault.

From the video the road was well lit. Motorways are designed at the very least to be able to stop in time if driving within the speed limit if there is an obstruction ahead. Defend the actions of the driver as much as you want, IMO, at the very least is was careless driving causing harm, have to wait and see what the police assessment of the incident and the driver has to say. 

I can't really form an opinion on this without knowing the ethnicity of the driver, protestors he hit, and the arresting officers.

The driver also seems to have evaded the police blocks earlier on the freeway, and entered the wring way.

You know the freeway was blocked already way before where this took place? And that includes all entries, but apparently he came up the freeway the wrong way.
