UK, China leading global Covid-19 vaccine race

Dr Yong Poovorawan, Chulalongkorn University expert virologist

A total of 23 prototype Covid-19 vaccines are being tested on humans around the globe, Chulalongkorn University virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan said on Thursday (July 16).

Three are at the most advanced stage of Phase 3 trials – two vaccines being developed by China’s Sinovac, and one by Oxford University and the UK’s AstraZeneca.

"Meanwhile, another 21 Covid-19 vaccines are under Phase 1 or Phase 2 human trials, including prototypes developed in China by CanSino Biological and the Beijing Biological Institute of Biotechnology, and in the US by Moderna and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases," said Dr Yong.

Another 140 prototype vaccines are being tested in animals, four of them in Thailand – two at Chulalongkorn University, one at Bionet Asia, and one under joint research between Mahidol University and the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation.

"This shows that countries worldwide are trying to overcome Covid-19," he said.

Third-phase trials are testing Covid-19 vaccines and placebo vaccines on large groups of people in countries with high risk of infection, said Yong, adding that Thailand and China have to conduct trials in other countries now that their domestic infection rates have fallen.

Phase 3 testing will also compare prototypes to ensure that any new vaccines match the efficacy of the most effective vaccine found, he added.

Does the Chinese one contain tiger bone or rhino horn?

Australia is far more advanced with a possible COVID-19 vaccine, as it's being tested on humans at the Queensland University.

Even though they mostly relate to nicknames of herbs, the Chinese have probably got the real thing in the same markets the whole thing allegedly kicked off from.

The Chinese have a head start on the rest of the world, might even be sitting on it.

Lol, they tested the Oxford vaccine on humans months ago and it's made it to phase 3 testing already. The only way the Australians could be further ahead is if they completed phase 3 testing and have a ready to use product that's being mass manufactured and rolled out around the country.

That means it's being tested right now on 1000's of people - that's just one step away from releasing it to the masses.

I have a feeling the GSK manufactured vaccine will be used far more than the Chinese Sinovac offering in every country outside China.

I expect the Chinese vaccine to meet 'unexpected regulatory hurdles' in most of the world.

With a flu virus -- sounds very ill-informed to me.

Said without so much as a hint of cynicism ????????

They made it in their lab and they need to finish it for the world. No back patting for them and they are not innocent or saviors if they get the vaccine first.

The aussies will always do that. The Oxford Uni vaccine will have been pushed to the small pages in the tabloids there no doubt to make it seem they are streets ahead. The yankees have a similar way in the way they present their coloured history and inventions etc. The old country gets little mention.

You forgot this smiley: :cheesy:

it just seems so disgusting that the people who caused this and then lied about it are making a vaccine and profiting from it.the US and UK ones will be bought up outside china im hoping theres something deeply wrong and concerning if not,who in their right mind would buy it from a moral perspective and who really could trust them?

I really hope that the UK win this race for a Vaccine against Covid19.

A vaccine with the logo ~ Made in China ~ really does not inspire a lot of confidence for several reasons.

Those are the ingredients for haggis.

China had about 8 years advance notice , plus its their virus

None are vaccines as people think of the term vaccine, they are all more akin to the flu jab... and will not protect beyond a few seasons or mutations. .

Thats not a vaccine.

"This shows that countries worldwide are trying to overcome Covid-19," he said.

No, it's not about overcoming Covid-19 Dr. Yong, it's about money!!!  That is why there is a race worldwide - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I thought Bill Gates had his "vaccine" ready from the beginning.

Refreshing, an article where Thailand's part was not overblown. Chula is doing tests on monkeys, together with University of Pennsylvania.

Coronaviruses mutate slower than flu viruses. So there is some hope. It took a while to get SARS v2.0. Of course there's plenty more in a cave in Yunnan to leak around.

Shakespeare must've been a regular at the local opium den, he figured out the traditional Chinese recipe.

China economy growing. The rest of the world struggling. Vaccine comes out. And wouldn't you know it, a mutuation appears coincidentally, wrecking all western economies. Further lock down. China takes over Thailand.

It turns Bangkok into wall to wall condos. Nana Plaza also becomes a condo. Because the Chinese love buildings condos ya see.
