Despite Trump’s pressure, most Americans think it is unsafe to reopen schools: Reuters poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Only one in four Americans think it is safe for public schools to reopen this fall as U.S. coronavirus cases climb, and four in 10 parents said they would likely keep their children home if classes resume, a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll shows.

 

The July 14-15 national online poll was conducted as the country's 13,000 school districts grapple with how to safely resume instruction after closing in the spring as infections spread. The results suggest President Donald Trump’s demand to fully reopen schools is at odds with how most Americans feel.

 

Just 26% of American adults said they thought it was safe for schools in their community to bring students back. Another 55% felt they were not safe, and 19% were not sure.

 

The response was split along party lines: Half of Republicans said they thought schools were safe, compared with only one in 10 Democrats.

 

Among respondents with school-age children, about four in 10 said it was unlikely that they would send them to school if in-person teaching resumes. Another five in 10 said they would send their kids to school, and the rest said they were unsure.

 

Trump recently has made reopening public schools a focus of his re-election campaign, in part to court suburban voters, especially women, who are increasingly unhappy with him. 

 

The Republican president has argued that the mortality rate from the coronavirus has declined in the United States, and that parents are under tremendous strain from managing their children and work at the same time. Trump said school districts must offer a full schedule of classes, and he threatened to cut funding from schools that do not follow through.

 

Yet the poll found that only three in 10 white women, including only two in 10 suburban white women, felt schools are safe to reopen. More than eight out of 10 white women said they are still concerned about the spread of the coronavirus, which has claimed more than 138,000 lives in the United States and has continued a rapid spread throughout much of the country.

 

White women are key for Trump's re-election bid. He won that demographic by 13 points in the 2016 election, and they are also one of the most likely subgroups to vote.

 

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who for months has led Trump in national polls, including a 10-point advantage among registered voters in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, has called for a more cautious approach to re-opening schools.

 

Americans are largely relying on guidance from public health experts – and not the Trump administration – on when and how schools should open, the Reuters/Ipsos survey found.

 

Asked who should determine when schools reopen in their community, 40% said they would leave the decision to public health experts, while 17% said it should be up to the school districts and 13% said their state’s governor should decide. Only 5% said they would leave it to the federal government.

 

When classes resume, only 20% said students should return for the full school calendar. Another 37% felt students should begin an online-only curriculum, and 43% said students should follow a hybrid schedule that includes some time in the classroom and some instruction online. 

 

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,114 American adults and has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of three percentage points.

Provide guidance, support, leadership. Help school districts and local governments to get to where the need to get.

Imo it’s a no brainer everyone knows what motivates trump and it’s not the health and wealfare of the American population young and old no parent would knowingly send their child into harms way no matter what the pressures imo just ignore trump and practice safe protocols good luck and good health 

Send the little brats back to skool and then the parents can go back to filling up them empty offices. Trump is an idiot but he is right about opening the economy and schools up.

From what I have been reading and hearing, schools are the least of the problem as children up to 18 are not so susceptible to Covid-19 as are the older ones, those with obesity problems and pre-existing conditions.

 

Kids immune systems are far better than the above as they are growing.

There are doubts about kids being less susceptible. And even if they are, they can still spread.

Rather than sharing pseudo-science about susceptibility and spread feel free to share a plan.

 

How will the school open?

How will schools be physically prepared?

What will schedules look like?

Will there be testing?

What are the criteria to open, re-close?

What do you do about children who have medical issues?

How do you replace teachers, bus drivers, school-crossing guards administrators when they contract Covid?

How do you handle school children who lack medical insurance?

 

And probably a thousand more issues which need to be planned for.

Why does anyone report or listen to the POTUS anymore?  Only good for jokes on late night talk shows AFAIK.  States must think for themselves, the Federal government will not stop funding public schools as Trump and DeVos threatened.  The money has already been appropriated by Congress.  Online learning will get better and State and local governments should continue to use the utmost caution and only open when case numbers are down in their respective areas.   Threats by POTUS are empty as he is only trying to abuse powers he does not have, as he has done since elected

She's omitted the issue of spreading via the kids.

And again that comparison with other western countries, 'they're opening' where the covid-19 situation is totally different.

The trouble is people in power DO listen and obey 45's feckless commands. As a result, people are dying, more will undoubtedly. They aren't empty, they're deadly.

And you're going to have to isolate the kids from their families so they don't spread it to vulnerable adults. Except for those children with 10 year old parents.

Is your country one of the ones being taught by 10 year olds ! According to these experts they are saying teaching online can be detrimental especially for disadvantage children because  the parent can't be involved all the time while working !

Despite the latest medial interventions for the critically ill seemingly to have reduced the fatality rate it would also seem  premature  to  go on claiming the death rate  has permanently gone down when these  new massive  record levels of infection spikes are only  just now starting to get close to the stage of illness that result in people succumbing to it.

The  fact that  may hospitals are again at  maximum capacity for  icu will inevitably see a decrease in  "best intervention" which sadly can only  result in  higher  mortality.

If 3 out of 4 who object to schools opening then given the  obvious escalation of infection any  "directive" from POTUS can only  be considered deliberate and dangerous  if attempted !
